My son’s PIP has been completely cut off.

My son has Asperger, OCD and anxiety and about 5 years ago he was victim of a crime, therefore PTSD. Despite a psychological report explaining his condition and struggles, the DWP has decided to cut his benefits from the enhanced to nothing just based on a phone call, probably when he had a good day. How can his disability disappear based on a phone call? I don’t mention the distress it’s causing as he might find himself in the street if not able to pay his rent. How is he supposed to live on? Can someone help please by giving us advice on how to appeal. We might have to go to a tribunal? Thank you

Appeal appeal appeal speak to mencap helpline for some advice aS well. It might be worth you speaking to the carers association for some support and information about how to take this forward.

We’re not his carer as he lives 200 miles away from us. He’s basically on his own and fends for himself.

My sons in care and I’m still classed as his carer, would he allow you to be his lasting power of attorney you can apply on the government website and do it really cheaply. I am my son’s deputy for health and well being and his finance and property although he hasn’t got a property. Because he lacks mental capacity. It’s so hard isn’t people have no idea you have to live it to understand. Good luck with everything

Thank you. I feel like it’s just a tick box exercise without taking care of people’s situations!

If it is just managing benefits e.g. PIP and he needs help managing, e.g. can't do sums very well etc. you can be appointed 'appointee' by DWP rather than Power of Attorney or Deputy. There are quite short time limits for appeal but you can certainly ask for explanation of reasons anyway.

Hi, this is really worrying news for you both. If you get to be his appointee for benefits you will also be able to attend any appointments with him or take phone calls. Having as much paperwork detailing his difficulties will help his appeal. Will his GP be able to help? Or the Autism website. I would suggest you get in touch with the citizens advice bureau who will be able to give advice on appealing. Is there anybody where your son lives who can help ie a support worker or maybe you can visit to help him.

Thank you. He just moved in October but hasn’t registered with a GP yet as he can deal online with his previous GP. Was too anxious to register. My husband has been in touch with a law firm on his behalf.
