Bank Accounts

I manage my son's bank account and was set up 12 years ago with RBS. I have got by and have my own access to handle his affairs, but their customer service is dire and I would like to change it without hassles. Can anyone advise? I have never legally become his appointee and don't need to because everything otherwise works well.

I am with the Halifax I was my sons appointee for his benefits but as soon as he became 18 I went for deputyship for property and finance and health and well-being and my advice to you is everything changes when they hit 18 and it’s a scary prospect. So I would strongly advise you to look into this as you can find your no longer listened to like you were when he was under 18 don’t be put off. It’s worth doing online on the gov.U.K. Website. Good luck

Thank you for the reply. My son is 33 and in supported living, they manage day to day issues brilliantly and he has a Monzo account into which I feed money from the RBS account where his personal income goes. I am looking for an account where I can continue to do this.

Hi there. If you are not already registered as your son’s appointee with the DWP then doing that will allow you to have any benefits your son receives paid into a bank account in your name. It is a good idea to setup a separate account in your name for this. I would have thought that any income from employment etc could be paid into the a/c too if your son has the capacity to say that he wants this to happen.

At the top of this ‘health unlocked page’ there is a search bar. If you type in ‘bank account’ it will bring up all posts that mention that and there is a filter down the right hand side where you can select posts just from groups you are a member of. It might be that someone else has asked the same as it must be a common dilemma. 🙂

I have 2 adult learning disabled sons who receive DWP benefits, and also local authority direct payments for their care services. I have two separate bank accounts with my own banking provider (First Direct) for their benefits to be paid into as I am their DWP appointee. The direct payments from the local authority to cover their care services go into separate accounts with the Coop Bank (I set up two joint accounts with them for myself with each son). No problem with either bank, though I know that since I set up the accounts banks are less inclined to offer free banking on current accounts. Good luck with sorting this out.
