Support Alzheimer's Society petition

VictoriaCA_Mencap profile image

Hi everyone,

The Alzheimer's Society has launched a petition calling on the government to commit to reforming social care. Many families are struggling to get the care they need for their loved one with dementia - including loved ones with a learning disability and dementia. Please take a moment to show your support for their campaign.

You can support their petition here: action.alzheimers.org.uk/pa...

Many thanks,

Victoria

I have signed the petition, and totally agree with all that was said. But the points made equally apply to all people in care who have a severe learning disability not just Alzheimer's. They are as vulnerable as children and deserve the same protection, perhaps Mencap could join forces with the Alzheimer's Society for the same cause ??

For the system to improve, the hard working care staff should receive a a decent wage to reflect the difficult and demanding work they do.

Most importantly, all staff in care homes should receive mandatory training and qualifications, specific to those they are caring for whether Alzheimer's or Autism.

Most difficulties occur, as we have seen in the heartbreaking documentaries, when care staff haven't had full training in understanding behaviours, therefore reacting and raising voices, causing behaviours to escalate beyond control.

Knowing how to communicate and pre-empt a situation is key, and only comes with intensive, ongoing, regulated training and qualifications.

Totally agree, it should be a vocation like nursing with specialist training and qualifications. Sadly this is unlikely to happen due to the huge cost and given that the elderly and disabled aren’t considered to be as useful as those who are seen to contribute to society. The inhouse training they receive at present is flimsy and totally inadequate. Signed.
