Housing for adults with disabilities

I am interested to find out the housing rights of adults with a learning disability. I know a young person who has been denied access to the waiting list for housing, but she has a global developmental delay, learning disability and autism. She wants mainstream housing as her sister is her primary carer and they want to be living independently from their Guardian.

Yep I had the same thing I phoned the council as my son was in an appalling care home and I wanted to get him on the housing register. They told me I couldn’t because he couldn’t live in a normal home he was to disabled he needed carers I told them he was living in my home previously he is living in an adapted bungalow now and if he’s given a bungalow or house that can be adapted And I can get staff to work with him. No he hasn’t worked for two years I said he’s never going to be able to work. They wouldn’t entertain putting him on the list at all. They told me to call social services I called social services for help they said we can’t help you we don’t deal with housing call the council and we can’t help with his social care needs either because he’s funded by continuing healthcare so literally everywhere I went I had the door shut firmly in my face it was disgusting.

Thanks for replying. This is a young person and her sister who live with their aunt. The aunt is moving away but I don't think housing will do anything until they are actually homeless, which shouldn't happen with someone with learning disabilities as she is too vulnerable.

Yes they do so are going to ask for help but often social workers have no influence over housing. They do have an advocate who managed to get them part way through the housing process but medical assessment said there was no need (as they are not homeless). Just trying to find out their rights as disabled - or do they not really have any.

I'm sorry to hear they've been experiencing such difficulty. My Uncle was offered a flat in a supported housing complex with the help of his social worker - admittedly it took a lot of chasing to get there and a certain amount of going around in circles. If the lady has a social worker I'd certainly suggest speaking to them, whether they can help with mainstream housing I don't know but at the very least they should be able to point you in the direction of any local groups / charities that may be able to help. The best of luck!
