Housing Element, 2 bedroom

Hi,I am thinking of taking a private rental tenancy property for my son, who has learning disability. He needs 24 hr support and therefore needs a 2 bedroom property and will need to claim housing element on his universal credit for a 2 bedroom property. Does anyone have experience of this and were you granted the 2 bedroom rate?

Thankyou

one of my friends with a LD had a two bed council property as she sometimes needed support staff to stay overnight. She got and Housing benefit for a two bedroom property and didnt have to pay spare bedroom tax.

yes my daughter rents privately and gets the housing element for a one bed flat. I’m not sure about provision for a 2 bed flat though. Best to speak to the council. Presumably if he needs 24hr support you’re already registered with social services? They should be able to advise. Good luck.

Thankyou, yes he has a social worker but they don't seem to be very knowledgeable! Even dwp won't give me a straight answer!

It shouldn't be an issue if your son needs 24 hr support he will obviously need a 2nd bedroom for a carer., there's no argument. Yes he should be entitled to housing benefit provided he hasn't got thousands of pounds in savings.

I know someone who needs 24 hour support that is about to move into a one bed flat , she will have a waking night carer , therefore she doesn’t need 2 bed flat. Don’t know if that would work for you.

Our issue when trying to find a private rental property for my son was that there are more people looking to rent than properties available, and so landlords' safe bet was to choose the tenant without LD. We just could not find a landlord prepared to rent to him, even with a parental guarantee.
