Hello there, I am a support worker looking to better myself in terms of the support I provide to individuals in the community. I am wanting to organize activities and was wondering what some of the common issues you, as parents and carers come across on a day to day basis when out and about. I would like it, if you could be so kind as to tell me some of your experiences and issues you may come across. Thank you for your time and stay safe everyone!

A big problem with non verbal young people is they have no chance to interact with their peers most of the time especially on leaving their school at 19. It's an isolated world for some (long before the Covid came along). Some carers don't get down to their level and watch and learn from them.

Music opens up to all and a way to express themselves. Not loud disco music.

There's no meeting places either. Wheelchair users need a bigger space.

Hello there! I do apologise for the late response. Thank you so much. I have personally been working with individuals with autism and learning difficulties for 9 years in residential care. I very much enjoy my job and have supported people to become more independent. I believe independence is key. None of this, doing things for individuals because its quicker or easier. I always find that giving people that independence, listening to their wants and needs, creating a professional supportive relationship with plenty of positive reinforcement really gives a huge sense of achievement. But, when it comes to trying to expand that from residential care into the community, I want to gain as much knowledge as possible in terms of liaising with families. No one knows someone better than their family after all. I just need to work closely with those around me to provide a variety of different solutions to peoples specific needs. I'm extremely excited about this as all I want to do is help family units that may be struggling <3 and see people achieve! Even if it just starts with a disco :)

Again, thank you for your response, it's been very helpful!

Take care
