Have a look at the NHS website and also the Autistic Society. Both have lots of info that might help you.
Hello Trish0703
Thanks for posting.
You have made excellent progress if you have got a diagnosis. Did this happen as school or via your GP? Would they be able to offer you help to understand it further?
Your childrens' school, and especially their teachers, would be a good starting point. Would you be able to have a chat with them about how you are feeling and ask for advice about how best to support your children.
Here are a few links that you might find helpful:
** mencap.org.uk/advice-and-su... - this is on Mencap's website and has more info about people and places that might be to help you.
** mencap.org.uk/advice-and-su... - another page on Mencap's website about Special Educational Needs
** autism.org.uk/about/what-is... - help understanding more about autism from the National Autistic Society
It might be easier to have a chat with someone about this, particularly if you have lots of questions. Mencap's helpline has trained advisors who can help -
call 0808 808 1111 or email helpline@mencap.org.uk.
I hope this helps a little. You are doing the right thing by asking questions and finding out what sort of support your children and you can get.
Best wishes
Sarah
Autism is like a jigsaw puzzle, we all have our own pieces to find to complete our own puzzle, it is not unusual to see SPLDs amongst the pieces! The Picture we see before Senior school are different to what we see as they grow older, our role is to read, study and learn so we who know the child best, can put our own puzzle together, for example, my daughter has Learning difficulties, Dyspraxia, ADHD, Autism, Pathological Demand Avoidance, anxiety and at 44 years of age has had her first Sensory assessment which has come out High and Definite! hope this helps. x
Make contact with Autistic groups online, there may well be other Mums local to you to meet up with, look into PDA/anxiety groups too! what area are you in?
