Hello. I am posting on behalf of my 27y niece who has mild autism, OCD, clinical paranoia, very low self esteem and often swings between anger and depression. She has recently moved to the Skipton area from the South and lives with her mum. She has had a couple of lovely work opportunities i.e. packing hampers for a farm shop and listening to children read at the local library - but every time she starts she immediately finds a reason to give up, thinking everyone 'hates' her, the place is too dirty etc etc.
She's intelligent and has potential to integrate but on her own she can't get further than the first step - and then runs away. This has been going on for years. What she really needs is someone who understands her needs and can support her every step of the way. She obviously needs on-going counselling but I feel that the best kind of therapy would be for her to be actively doing something surrounded by people with whom she feels comfortable.
I was wondering how Mencap can help this young lady whose life could be dramatically improved if she had some kind of purpose. How can I get in touch with someone who can help and advise?
Many thanks in advance.

Your niece is very lucky to have you. I would suggest you call Mencap's helpline. It is free and confidential and the trained advisors will be able to talk to you about your niece.
Advisors are available from 9am to 3pm, Monday to Friday on 0808 808 1111 or you can email helpline@mencap.org.uk if that is easier.
Hi Adele, I think your niece needs a lot of encouragement and support and perhaps some Group Therapy doe people with autism etc. Presently, my LD and Autistic son finds it hard to keep a job as he misbehaves and that is because, he has No Contact with us {which is 100% wrong}. He did not misbehave when he lived with us. Therefore, I think Family support may be absent for your niece. Good luck. Cheers Danx
