Getting help with Social Care

The start point for getting social care for an adult is to request a care needs assessment ( mencap.org.uk/advice-and-su... ) from the local authority. Mention The Care Act 2014 - legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/20...

The authority must carry out an assessment if someone may have eligible needs.

Someone has eligible needs if:

• They have a physical or mental illness or impairment

• They are unable to meet two or more of a set list of outcomes ( eg they can’t maintain their personal hygiene, can’t maintain a habitable home environment)

• As a consequence there is or is likely to be, a significant impact on their wellbeing.

The next step is a means test to see if they qualify for state funding.

The final step is for the local authority to produce a care and support plan with the person and their family/carer.

Mencap’s website has advice on this process ( mencap.org.uk/advice-and-su... ) and how to challenge a local authority decision not to give social care ( mencap.org.uk/advice-and-su... ).

Thanks for this. You should also remember to ask for a carers assessment too. 😃

Hi Freddy44, thanks for this, you are right to point this out. I didn't want to overwhelm with too much information, but carers are so important!
