Thanks for posting . I have recorded Panorama . I will watch it when I am ready for it? I do watch any programme to do with learning disabilities and sometimes they are on my mind for days after when it's distressing . My son is 34 , he lives at home with me and the thought of him or others being mistreated is just an nightmare for us all . I know this doesn't happen everywere but just one place is one too many

Yes I saw the said programme, so distressing. I have a son with SLD, he is 45yrs old and in supported living but only shares with 1 other man. There are still issues but nothing like that. I believe these units shouldn’t be allowed to operate without cctv, including care homes for the elderly, which would offer some protection for these vulnerable adults at least. These so called “care workers” should actually be put in prison, not just lose their jobs. Nothing seems to have changed since Winterbourne 8yrs ago, it makes my blood boil.

I believe that some of the workers have been charged, but how far that will go will remain to be seen. Many of the people employed in these types of places are there as a last resort to losing their benefits, that is not to say that there aren't people who like their job and are caring and compassionate. These roles are usually at the minimum wage pay grade hence the acute shortage of people to work in the LD care "industry" especially where the situations are often challenging. What the answer is I don't know, but direct payments and personal health may offer solutions if enough family carers can get together. I know of a residential home which was started by parents using the budgets and setting up their own housing scheme, with parents as the trustees. They have a very low turnover in staff and ensure the home is monitored and staff supported.
