I tried to get appointeeship for my youngest son for his finances. It cost a few hundred pounds to apply and we were turned down because I was already the appointee. Renaissance Legal run really good free online webinar advice.

I do t know anything about deputyship but am appointee for my daughter which is sufficient to manage her benefits. I also set up power of attorney for health and financial matters (separately). It is free as my daughter has qualifying benefits. I’ve found these to be enough for managing healthcare and financial matters and also for support card via social services. I have also set up our wills and a trust fund. We went through Renaissance Legal as I was very impressed with their online seminar through Mencap. They have been extremely helpful and I feel really confident in them for when I’m not here. It wasn’t cheap but it gives me peace of mind. Hope that helps.

Hi Mam2boys2 , thanks for your message. We had a solicitor from Irwin Mitchell answer questions on deputyships amongst other things last year, which might be helpful to read throughhealthunlocked.com/mencap/p...

We also have some general information on our website about deputyships here: mencap.org.uk/resource/appo...

I would recommend getting in touch with our Learning Disability Helpline as well, to speak with one of our trained advisers, as this is a really complex things to get to grips with. They'll be able to offer some support and signpost to other sources of information that can help. You can get in touch with them free on 0808 808 1111 or by email on helpline@mencap.org.uk if you prefer.

Hope that helps. 🙂

Hi I’m so pleased that Mencap offers advice and support to relatives wanting to do the best for their loved ones who have learning disabilities.

The whole legal stuff around the Court of Protection, deputy ships and LPAs seems to be a minefield. I understand the need to protect vulnerable people but the view seems to be relatives are a risk and the state knows better.

I think there needs to be a reversal of this approach whereby relatives are given authority for health and finances and then spot checks can be made by the authorities as and when to protect individuals. This would also save the government a lot of money that must be tied up in this bureaucratic regime.

How about a campaign Mencap.?

Agree, it's a minefield & as unpaid Carer, I wouldn't be able to afford all these applications, I manage with P.O.Attorney for my 34yr old so far. I don't have any funds to leave a Will with Money in a Trust Fund. Worried about this, when I'm gone.

I have autism however I suspect from your notes that this may help pip helps you pay for transport costs which he may need to get about I don't quite know how to include yourself as an appointee in terms of costs mind as I am too independent for it so I never managed to find things out like that but it might be worth asking for him as it sounds like he maybe covered ! Also high strength fish oil tablets help with my disability it depends where you get them from as to how much they cost .
