I've never posted on here before but I'm looking for some advice. My dad has been diagnosed with a stage 4 brain tumor. As a family we have been looking into complementary treatment. CBD has really helped with with pain relief! We have done a little research into THC and in some cases it has helped reduce tumor size. I know it's illegal but we are willing to take the risk of it helps him in anyway to enjoy the time he has left. Does anyone have any experience with this? Does it have to be pure THC or can it be an infused oil of the full plant? Any advice on dosage and how to administer. Thank you for reading

Shanny1,

Welcome.

Laws regarding use of marijuana and CBD vary by state and continue to be in flux.

This reference from WebMD is from Jan 2019: webmd.com/pain-management/n...

One of the challenges for use of marijuana or CBD is that dosing, unless under prescription, can't be predicted. Here is a recent story from CBS which tested some samples: cbsnews.com/news/cbd-cbs-ne...

So I think it would be difficult to hear recommendations, but there may be folks on this platform who have some. There is plenty of generally available commentary for use of THC products for anxiety or pain management or nausea, but not great science because the US has restricted so much research by how marijuana has been scheduled as a drug.

In our case, we ask our treating oncologist about any supplements/ vitamins, potential vaccines, and use of over the counter meds, or CBD oil/ smokable marijuana. Each of our loved ones may be involved in clinical trials where variations from protocol can potentially affect outcomes, or if there is lung or liver involvement, you have to balance helpfulness against toxicity potentials for drug interactions. We have found these conversations helpful and clarifying whenever we have initiated them.

I personally don't have any problems with patients (or any human, for that matter) checking out options that are potentially helpful and definitely not on the harmful list (there are some cancer related "treatment interventions" that are total quackery and dangerous, including for melanoma).

Thanks for your question,

Missy
