Help!!! Just six days to go until our HU spring 2025 event!
It's going to take me over three hours to run a metric marathon ... and we only have an hour's worth of music on our playlist!
With over 36 runners signed up, I'm sure we must be able to come up with some more tracks for the list.
So, please, please ... tell us your favourite running tunes and save me from looped play ๐ Just let us know your suggested tunes/artist in the comments below.
Running and music can be delicate and is very personal. It interferes with your running rhythm and levels of fatigue. It could boost your run but it can also drain your brain focus and irritate you.
As a rule, when running l always listen to something that l enjoy listening to when l am comfortable at home. Alone. I transfer that to my runs. But if the running conditions are not fine (Iโm cold, itโs too windy, Iโm tired) even my music wonโt help - so Iโll turn it off.
Crucially, if I am to listen to somebody elseโs playlist (Spotify, for example) or tunes l simply dislike - the run is off. It would simply irritate my focus.
Having said all this, l absolutely respect and admire anyone who can comfortably run along any random music playlist and complete their tasks, l simply canโt. ๐
Equally, l wish you complete the playlist and you all enjoy it! ๐
Like many things with running, I'd agree that music is a very personal preference. Music can have a very strong positive effect on my runs one day, and a very negative effect another. For me, it's not so much the run itself but the state of play of my headspace that is the most important factor in my choosing music or silence, tried and tested or eclectic and out there ๐With these HU playlists I've often given grateful thanks for the skip button, but it's generally given me a laugh ๐
I would make suggestions, but I can't run to music - quite literally as it makes me want to run to the beat and my body (especially my asthmatic lungs!) just can't keep up!!! I end up listening to audio books. Having said that, I have saved the list on Spotify just in case!
I used to listen to books, but would find myself drifting far, far away during a run and missing huge chunks of it ๐ . Same with podcasts. So my solution is generally slow easy music. As MrRun says, it's all very personal ๐
On Spotify I have a complation of songs compiled for runners by Jancanrun, named "Retro Runners, Birthday Number Ones, "2 hours 38 minutes, certainly OK for 10K or 10 mile runners and most HM runners, it has my favourite running song on it which is "Keep on running by the Spencer Davis Group,"
I tend to run to spoken word podcasts precisely because I don't want to get cadence locked to the music, and my cadence is fairly high (170-180spm), so my recommendations might not be suitable to all.
The forecast for Sunday morning here (north Manchester) looks ideal. Best of luck to the Manchester marathoners!
My cadence is usually 175 to 180 too. I'm not sure I react to the beat of the music physically, mine is more a mental reaction that taps into my energy level I think. My music of choice is actually pretty slow relative to my cadence. Sadly my concentration when running, is often not good enough to stay focused on a podcast ๐Here's to decent weather everywhere on Sunday. Enjoy ๐
Cheers nowster! I have to say that most of my long training runs have been spent listening to Stuart Maconieโs Full English. Superb book about his recreation of J B Priestleyโs English Journey. I just got lost in it and drifted off to those places he was talking about. Handy that it lasted about 10 hours of listening!
Sometimes, especially on a 10k or longer run, I will just shuffle my whole iTunes library. I love hearing something I havenโt heard for ages and if I donโt like it I can just skip.
I really enjoy the HU playlists! It adds to the whole ethos of the event. Some I do skip but usually don't have to because like you said linda9389 they just make you smile I found it added to the feeling we were running it 'together'. I have added songs from the playlist to my own because I've enjoyed running to them so much ๐
