Thank you so much for your pompoms but I didn’t make this one today ☹️

It’s always a hard decision to step away from a race but in the end it was the right thing for me although obviously I’m disappointed. (I’m not going to think about the bling 😢) It is such a gorgeous day here that it would have been a fab run no doubt.

Late on Friday night my right knee and foot started to feel very sore. I have no idea why. I rolled a ball under the foot and iced/heated my knee and went to bed hoping everything would feel better in the morning.

The next morning the foot was much better but the knee hurt walking down the stairs and I was hobbling all day. I thought there was no way I could run 10 miles on that and so, in my head, I had already made the decision not to run. I’ve made loads of mistakes in the past and ran when I shouldn’t have and so I am working hard to rise above the lure of the bling (🤩) and make the right decision for me. The other factor was that we are going away in a few days and anticipate a fair bit of walking so I didn’t want to risk further injury and not be able to walk very much. That wouldn’t have worked at all.

Typically, this morning everything felt a lot better 🙄 I thought I’d do a little test run and managed 6K with no major pain and only a little niggle. Would I have been ok on the 10 miles? I’ll never know but the past is the past and I just need to work out what caused the pains to begin with so that I don’t repeat the mistake.

I did do some gardening during the week but no kneeling and nothing strenuous. I did “gentle gardening” (pruning roses and feeding, etc) and I wore old running shoes which I had worn before. I have no clue. If everything feels ok tomorrow I’ll try a longer run on Tuesday to see what happens.

As Toyah said, “It’s a mystery.” 🧐

Stop the press! Runner makes sensible decision! 😂🤣

I've done the same with a HM. It's better not doing it by decision than having a DNF.

Take care IP!

😂 I’m not often called sensible but I’m learning from my past mistakes which often took me out of any running at all for several weeks.

There will be other races and other bling 🤗

Sensible decision IP, by not running that 10 miles run, once you have recovered you'll be back to running very soon.

Thanks Al. The short run today felt ok so 🤞

Such a shame you couldn’t run but it sounds like a wise decision Irishprincess . I hope you recover soon so that you can do the Bath Half.

Thanks Dexy. I’m not doing Bath this year, but I may have something else in mind 🙂

Arrgghhh IP Life can be so unfair 🤬

Good on you for looking further ahead. Bet the weather will be even better next year!

Enjoy the trip away, and forget all about it.

(Sending a hug tho)

Thanks Linda 😊 With the start of nice weather (hopefully) I didn't want to take a risk that might put me on the IC.

”Superstar misses out on bling chance shocker!!!” Really really good call IP.

You will probably never know what caused it. I had a knee niggle earlier this year. I booked a physio appointment, but it cleared up before I got there. Didn’t matter;I always need lots of work somewhere! You are clearly saving your self for something……watch this space 👀🤗

It’s strange isn’t it BC? It could be something very simple. I did massage out a particularly tight spot on my calf last night so that could have been the cause. Onwards and

You need a gardener! Doesn’t mix with running 🙂

Oops, I seem to have sent my reply to you without finishing the sentence!

I do have someone to do the heavy work but there’s nothing like getting up close and personal to my plants. I tell them they are beautiful and they shine 🌼🌷

🙂 I wasn’t being entirely serious; I know how much your garden means to you! 💐

What a shame IP. Being sensible isn't easy when you really want something. An additional 10k on top of the 6k is a lot of extra distance to cover and you might have pushed the pace too. Hope you can relax and enjoy your holiday. 🙂

Irishprincess profile image
IrishprincessAdministratorHalf Marathon in reply toCantstopmenow

You're right, an extra 10K is a lot. I might have limped through it but then been on the IC for ages afterwards ☹️

The running shoes are always the first thing I pack for a holiday 😍

Toyah was right IP! 👍🙂 You definitely made the sensible decision - hard and disappointing though that was. I hope that everything settles fully and that your run on Tuesday goes well.🙂🤞

Such a hard decision but the right one....there will be more bling in your future, but if you'd run that 10 miles today it could have put you out of running for ages and you'd have hated that xx

Irishprincess profile image
IrishprincessAdministratorHalf Marathon in reply toSueAppleRun

You're so right Sue. I would have hated it, especially now that the weather is getting nicer 🤞 Also, I want to enjoy my races and not worry about every step along the way which I probably would have done if I’d gone ahead today.

Much the best decision, and you live to run another day

I saw Toyah in concert way back in the day. My boyfriend at the time liked her 🙄

I’m feeling hopeful for Tuesday 🤞

There’s plenty more bling to be had for you Irishprincess You were super sensible and sacrificed this one, but imagine if you’d attempted the race and had to pull up? A potential DNF and maybe not being able to run for a good while. Hope this niggle isn’t a long lasting one, and you’ve nipped it in the bud. ☝️ 🙏

Irishprincess profile image
IrishprincessAdministratorHalf Marathon in reply tocheekychipmunks

Hardly any sign of it this morning. Typical 🙄 but I’ll test it tomorrow on a longer run 🤞

Cowladyrunning profile image

Ah that's a shame but very sensible - you don't want to jeopardise that holiday activity.

Irishprincess profile image
IrishprincessAdministratorHalf Marathon in reply toCowladyrunning

We had already postponed this little holiday once before because my husband needed a knee operation so it wouldn’t have done at all if we had to postpone it yet again 🫢

TailChaser profile image

Oh IP, sometimes you have to go with your gut instinct even if it’s just a bit of Maranoia (I’m sure it’s there for non marathons as well!). I reckon you made the right decision too. Enjoy your holiday, there’ll be other races.

Irishprincess profile image
IrishprincessAdministratorHalf Marathon in reply toTailChaser

I did think it might be race-itis as I call it TC. I’ve had pre-race niggles before that have mysteriously disappeared on the day. But this was worse so I think it was a proper thing 😂

Mudita11 profile image

Sounds like you did the right thing, annoying as it is. As others have said, you live to fight another day! Glad the knee niggle has more or less gone now 👌🏻 Good luck with the long run on Tuesday and enjoy your time away x

Thanks Mudita 😊 I’m looking forward to tomorrow as it will be a good test but the foot niggle has disappeared completely!

Such a difficult decision. I'm sure you will have trained for it, and looked forward to it, but 10 miles is a very long way, perhaps if it had been shorter...you know yourself well, I'm sure it was the right thing to do. There'll be others...

If it had been a 10K I might have risked it, but you're right CG, 10 miles is a long way with a niggle.

Already forgotten and looking forwards… 🏃‍♀️

Ok, that felt a bit tough, a 3k over last week’s long run, but I managed the set 8 miles which I rounded up to 13k and kept the overall pace below 7min/k. I had one or two differences of opinion with my water bottle which caused two complete stops; as a result I probably under-hydrated (still lots left out of 500ml when I finished). No matter,I got there! Laps 8,9 and 10 are a steady uphill (12m, 12m and 22m) which doesn’t help when I am starting to tire, but in the end it helps to build up stamina and fitness. So, to be tolerated at this stage. I was hoping for a cut back week next….but no, the long run is 10 miles! We will see!!I need to keep my eye on the ball; steady build up of distance; this is not about pace! I was ready for my flat white and chat with a lovely family (mum and two daughters) who I sometimes run into at the cafe. So, a nice ending 🙂. Lunch then Molly walk!!🐶
