Today was the vitality 10k in London. I’d nervously watching the weather and sure enough the torrential rain seemed inevitable and we got an email from the event with suggestions like bin-bags and not trying to shelter under trees! So I was feeling pretty nervous. I’m not against running in the rain but popping out of my house for a drizzly 5k is different to slogging into London, standing about for your wave and being soaked before you even start a 10k!
It rained most of the night and morning but it let up about 8:45 when I left the house. It seemed to be holding off by the time my wave was due so I made the decision to leave my jacket in the kit bag and take my sunglasses (power of positive thinking!).
As I did it last year I felt pretty calm at the start and spent the time in my pen enjoying what a brilliantly diverse and friendly event it was. I was also more prepared for the initial gradual uphill (unpleasant discovery last year!) and generally felt pretty good.
It was really hot and humid though and I was wish long I had opted for a tank top. I felt pretty low powered at about 8k and finished up my electrolyte drink and ate a jelly baby (not sure the latter made any impact at all!😂). I did spot a guy waving a Kenyan flag which gave me boost (I’m Kenyan).
Like last year, the last km was HARD and I didn’t have much in the tank for a final push but I made it over the line smiling.
Turns out I got a PB of 1:03 which I’m really pleased with, especially given the humidity which I never love! I’m actually more proud that I did it at all - the rain almost put me off but I was willing to try and weird as it seems, that’s the real win for me.
Most of all- the Pom-pom cheer was just wonderful. I’m not sure I would have been so determined to do it if it hadn’t been for that! I’m always in awe of what a wonderful and supportive group this is - so thanks ☺️ 🥲
Guess I’m off to book early bird entry for next year! 😂
