It’s a strange concept at these events because it’s not really about placing in the race itself, although that’s useful. Basically you race with others rather than against them to get a good time. The organisers set up the races so that you are with other runners who are about the same time as you. This in turn will urge you on to a better time as you will want to beat someone who is right there next to you rather than miles ahead or behind. It’sa similar concept in some ways to how pacers are used in the middle distance events.

You can see now perhaps how having a head wind makes it an almost pointless exercise in terms of timings. In this case it’s more about race experience.

Anyway, I’ll turn up and you never know. The wind might just be in my sails after all.
