Has anyone ever had 3D gait analysis?

And if so, was it useful?

I am going to see a (new) podiatrist soon and, although I haven’t booked the 3D analysis the opportunity is there.

I’ve read a bit about it and it sounds fab but is it all hype? It’s fairly expensive so I would need to be convinced of the benefits before I’d do it.

Any thoughts from anyone?

I know cheekychipmunks had a special, more expensive, gait analysis but I don’t know if it was 3D. Watch this space……

Thanks Dexy. I see Munks has just posted!

Hi IP, Dexy is right, although I don’t recall if mine was 3D. It was when I first began running and you know what memories are like! 🤪 I have a feeling they were upgrading to 3D, but I had their old style, but still really thorough, 90 minute gait analysis. I used these people:

mhsportspodiatry.com/

My daughter had a 3D one at the same place and I went to watch (it’s really interesting!). She was wired up all over her torso and limbs and it was fun to see the playback of her looking like a little stick person. I’d thoroughly recommend it. We’ve have had NO issues (touch wood) with injury and neither of us were upsold shoes. In fact we’re both bog standard neutral and Matt said we were free to go away and buy from anywhere we liked.

I’d say go for it. Good luck. 😀

This is where I’m going Munks! How spooky! I asked my osteopath if she could recommend a podiatrist as mine is just too far away to see regularly and she recommended this guy. I’ve booked an initial consultation to begin with but I see he has this 3D option.

You and your daughter clearly had no issues but if I do this then I imagine I will have a few 🙄

Thanks for your reply, it’s really useful 👍

That’s a coincidence IP! A friend recommended him and said the majority of her running club use him and highly rate him. I thought he was great, and I hope you do too! Matt’s lovely. 😀

And he’s a runner too which always helps I think. He’s run a HM in 1:13! 😳

Yes he is. One of his running buddies was close to making the Olympic team I think he said. He knows his stuff! 😍

The only time I have gone high tech is when a podiatrist used a a floor plate linked to a computer to help to work out what was happening with my foot. My foot kept swelling when I ran and it seemed to bamboozle the professionals. The computer confirmed (showed diagrammatically) the fault in my foot movement, and it could have designed and built (cad/cam) an orthotic for me. But I wasn’t happy that we had got to the bottom of the problem, so I went to see my brilliant physio. She just got me to do a couple of squats, which she viewed front and back, and told me which tendon was causing the problem, and went on to tell me how we were going to fix it. Which we did, pdq. She also said that my arches were too high for orthotics, so we needed to fix the over pronation problem rather than compensate for it. Based on that experience, I wouldn’t rush to have a tech check up before having a physical check and listening to a physio explain how a clever gait analysis would help. BUT we are in race season and time is precious I know. Maybe cheeky will have some insight as Dexy5 says. Hope you get it sorted out quickly.🙂

Thanks BC. Munks has indeed replied with very useful information!

You’re very lucky you have found such a great physio. It’s so hard to find good professionals that know their stuff and just “get it”. I do have a really good podiatrist but he is so far away that it’s become impractical for me to see him regularly. And while I have had good physios in my time I’m also convinced that the advice of two in particular last year did more damage to my back than helped.

I need to get my bling addiction satisfied BC, and soon!

Well done Cheeky; always comes up trumps. You are right about my physio; I have told her that she is a genius! She instinctively recognises/ feels patterns where others don’t; as you say “ she just gets it.” Hope your appointment goes well 🙂.

It's a bit like going with a car to a garage and them saying they want to replace a big expensive part because the computer diagnostics says it's not working, when the fault is actually a bit of broken wiring not sending any power to that thing.

I remember all that malarkey BC. Your physio saved the day, and has been ever since. 🙏🏻

She has cheeky. Not everyone can use intellect and feelings at the same time to problem solve. She does it as well as anyone I have met.

Gait data is definitely helpful for a runner. Especially for those who suffer a lot of recurrent soreness, pain and injury, such as sport injury in sole, heel, shin or knee after years of running.

Long-time pain or injury tells a runner that something is wrong about your body and your running exercise. In terms of my experience (an ordinary runner), I suggest go through the following points to better prevent and avoid sport injury from running.

1. Warm-up and stretch before and after a run

If you plan to run at least an hour, move you joints, stretch your legs, wake up the muscles, raise the heart rate from a 15-minute warm-up exercise before the run , and make a deep relaxing of your body from a 15-minute stretching after the run. You can also use a foam roller or a percussion massage gun to help relieve the fatigue and strain.

2. Targeted training and Cross training

Recurrent pain and injuries tell your weak points in running. Pain is an indication that you need identify and overcome the weakness that bothers you so much so far. We learn from pain. That's the meaning and value of pain.

Except targeted training for strengthening and improving the weak spots in a runner's physical body, cross training works well in this regard. UsualIy I choose jumping rope and yoga as complementary means of running training. Swimming is nice too.

3. Moderate, progressive form of exercise

Have the right short-term and long-term training plan. Be true to yourself in every exercise. Rest and recover is as important as how you run. Run with ease but not effortlessly.

For me, the goal of running is to keep fit and stay a positive attitude in life. If there is a meaning, it would be never give up.

So, in a word, scientific data of running may be important, but the key, or essence of running is always the inside, the inner strength, that is, be true to yourself and don't give up easily.

Enjoy your day! 😀

I wish I could find a decent podiatrist .... and physio .... 😍😍😍

Do let us know what you think of it IP 🤞😊

In the end I didn't have the 3D analysis Linda because the podiatrist didn't think I needed it. He did give me a thorough checking over though from the flexibility of my big toes upto my hips and it was mixed results.

All in all, he doesn't believe I have major issues which is great news. He doesn't think I have flat feet even though my first podiatrist thought I had. He showed me the graphics and it certainly doesn't look like they are flat. My right big toe is very rigid but my left one is very flexible! But orthotics do give my feet some needed support so he will make me a new pair with less arch support and more flexibility elsewhere and let’s see how it goes.

My ankles and calves strength is good but my hips are weak. The video footage shows my right hip drops significantly 🙄 He’s going to give me exercises for that.

But I was also thinking that I haven't returned to my reformer Pilates since I hurt my back last year and I’m sure that has a lot to do with my weakened hips as we did a lot of work on hips and hip flexors.

So far, I’m very impressed with his professionalism and logic, the consultation was thorough and he showed me the results and talked me through them.

The proof, I guess, is in the pudding and I’m excited to try the new insoles which I’ll get in a few weeks.

He gave me some advice about building up my distance again, so all in all, I feel very positive 🤗

Let’s see 🤞

That sounds like great feedback IP. Good luck with the new insoles when they arrive.
