Yesterday I headed to Longford to run their half marathon. It is a 5.6k loop along the banks of the Royal canal. The event also included an ultra and a marathon, which made for a great atmosphere as people called out to fellow runners on the opposite bank. The crowd are at the start/ finish as is the water station. As you come within 1k of each loop start, you can hear the crowd cheering and the commentator on the PA system encouraging everyone. There was a lady in her late 70s completing her 300th marathon, just amazing to see, the runners pausing to talk to her and cheering her on.
As it is all on a tarmac path and away from traffic, it was very safe, and also scenic. The only hazards being the ducks and moorhens, who didn't understand the highway code π¦
I had planned an easy run just to finish due to lack of training, but a PB came within reach, so I sprinted for the finish. PB achieved and medal awarded, but I was so giddy I forgot to stop my watch. I'll be back next year to run it again.
If you are in Ireland, or thinking of a nice HM, this is the one to go for. Highly recommended! I'll be back!
