Soaked to the skin; the price of entering a race!

Today was planned as a long(ish) slow run day. I thought that a steady 12k would be alright, set off about 10, nice coffee to finish, home for lunch; job organised …until I looked out of the window. It was, in the local vernacular, chucking it down! The forecast looked much better for this afternoon, so I thought, just leave it until after lunch….but then reality struck. If the heavens open at GSR race time, I will just have to run in it. So this morning became a training and acclimatisation opportunity 🤪. 12k in the pouring rain is ok really, until you stop! I arrived for my post run coffee sopping wet and bedraggled, and as I dried out, I started to feel the cold. Latent heat of vaporisation being extracted if I remember my physics correctly. So no real relief until I got home to a hot shower. One of those runs which it is good to look back on! 6:53/k pace and 107m total ascent was a good little work out. I need carbs…..

At lease running in the rain is quite warm at the moment. But you are right, it is the stopping that soon becomes unpleasant. I dont mind a wet run so long as I’m wearing waterproof shoes (hate wet feet) and I can come straight in and get in the shower. My hubby says I am terrible for faffing about when I get home from a run (i do like to cool down and check my data) but if I come home wet it is a vert different story, Well done for braving the elements.

I think that the extended good weather has made me soft!! Maybe I need to review my bad weather kit! Trip to the running shop ….?

It’s so unbelievably wet, isn’t it! I swapped my long run for a short interval run this morning and just got back before it really got going. It’s horrible to stop and not be able to get warm! Those showers post that sort of run are absolutely golden. Sounds like a great run though-hopefully that made it worth the drenching!

Bath Half is my upcoming event. You could well be right about training in the rain in case of a downpour. Think will have to follow your example! Thanks for the inspiration! 🌧 🏃‍♀️

🙂 don’t listen to me; I am probably slightly crazy 😂😂

Aren’t all of us runners a little bats?! Tomorrow needs to be my ten NRC miler (which will probably be 11 real miles!) come rain or shine so I’m hoping it’s not a full two hours of solid water. I think I’ll plan for a hot bath afterwards!!!

🦇🦇🦇 Have few little bats! Keep thinking of the bath as you flit along!

UTS says “it never rains in Southsea “

But you are so right Beachcomber66 . We have supported the runners at the GSR in all weathers . Pouring rain, when they still had cooling off showers going (?) Strong westerlies (2017?) making the homeward run difficult. Boiling hot sunshine in 2018 and no cooling showers. We were very lucky in 2019 and 2021 when I ran, so hope it will be as good for you.

Well done for going out in it, but although running in the rain is fine, you do get cold quickly afterwards. I was glad I went home and changed into dry clothes straight after my parkrun on Saturday. We have also left a rucksack in a friendly cafe before running sometimes, just to have some extra layers available. Is that an option for you?

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66AdministratorHalf Marathon in reply toDexy5

It certainly is possible; brilliant! The cafe would look after a bag with towel and dry clothes for me...and then I can have my coffee feeling drying and warm! We go in there so often I should have an equity share by now!

I was due to go for my club run tonight, but, as I set off, the rain started and, by the time I arrived, it was torrential and I bailed! Kudos to those runners who continued

Apart from the getting cold after, your run sounds about perfect, being wet is fine, wet and cold not so much so, good training though

Beachcomber66 profile image

Hi there folks. It was fine whilst I was running. Maybe I should have gone straight home afterwards rather than hanging around for post run coffee. It has been a good summer, but Autumn is around the corner and a different approach is needed.Definitely good training.

Well done you...running and rain are a real combination.. as you say, it is fine while you keep going ! Setting out whilst it is raining... takes some determination... Bravo!

Hi Floss. I am a “dive into the pool” man at the swimming baths. It is ok once you are in! Getting out of the door for a run in rain just takes a bit of effort, but once out I hardly notice the weather. More good miles in my legs!

Ohh yuc, takes the edge off a brownie and flat white!!! I had the same thoughts with my bike, but I'm so averse to riding in the rain I avoided it like the plague figuring that once on race day, if it came to that, would be once too many!!!!! You're a better man than I BC 😊

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66AdministratorHalf Marathon in reply tolinda9389

😂 nobody has said that to me for a long time!

Thinking about it, a stop in the cafe hasn’t been possible in the past two winters because of lockdown. When it was open, they just served a takeaway at the door, so no sitting around in wet stuff was possible. I had just forgotten the wet weather drill!! Apart from Dexy5’s genius idea about leaving a bag there, I could just grab a coffee “to go” and head straight home. Solutions are always in the detail! My mantra!! 🙂

Well done Beachcomber66 👍🏻

I don’t mind running in the rain but I was so cold earlier this week from being soaking wet that I struggled to open my front door. My Hoka Goretex shakedry had collected so much water in the hood that I got another drenching as I took it off. Never regret a run though 🤣

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66AdministratorHalf Marathon in reply toRunWillie

😂 … I would have been in Basil Fawlty mode as in, “what’s the point of a waterproof top which tries to drown you as you take it off!” Nothing wrong with the run; my bad weather apres run arrangements need work.

I love running in the rain, but, I dont like getting wet feet which is the worse, because although skin is waterproof and we can dry it , shoes take ages 😞. However I have just tried some waterproof spray. Not sure yet how effective it is on my running shoes, so time will tell!!🤞

Beachcomber66 profile image

My run was part road, part trail….my shoes are soaking! I need to sort them out!

yup, it’s ok to be wet, but cold and wet is no fun ☹️ We soon get the chills once we stop running. It feels horrible. Brrrrrr

I hope you’re warmed up now 🔥😀

Training and acclimatisation opportunity!!!! Shaking my head in astonishment! I had thought that if I entered a race and it was raining on the day, I would forfeit any fee and not run! I once got completely caught in very heavy rain. Just looked up this run, it was 9km and I set out in dry conditions. I was, like you, totally drenched. I wore a zipped cardigan top which was tied around my waist, I had to keep wringing out the sleeves. Amazingly I really enjoyed the experience and found myself giggling as I ran, and thinking what had happened to me that I was running in 'this'. Didn't actually have much choice if I wanted to get home. Still don't plan to start runs in heavy rain. All this said, of course, while currently trying to rehab knee, Achilles and hamstring. One run left in C25k W8, still using reduced stride to prevent stretching my hamstring, as advised by physio.

That is great progress though >61; brilliant work. I have had to make compromises on pace, and I am still doing exercises, but following my 6 months of hassle I am now into my 5th injury free month 🤞🤞🤞. So, when it all comes together, the problems can just suddenly disappear, like a passing rain cloud! All about discipline.....on which topic I am trying my best!

Marvelous BC. Marvelous in every way! Running in the rain (when it’s warm) is the absolute best and I personally get disappointed if it stops raining while I’m out. And you’re right, there’s nothing you can do about it on race day except forfeit (then you wouldn’t get the bling 😱), so it’s good that you went out.

Not long now …… 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

That reminds me of a training run I did last winter. It was dark by the time I set off and chucking it down! Not one of my more enjoyable runs but I do get a certain amount of satisfaction for having done it. Still, I had a race booked so I needed to do the training. I guess it paid off in that I managed a PB in the race.

Maybe not so practical when you’re dropping in to a coffee shop but, if you can dry off with a towel and change into a dry top, that makes a huge difference.

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66AdministratorHalf Marathon in reply toSkiMonday

I plan to leave a bag at the cafe for emergencies. The problem today was that the run was dry, but by the time I had finished my coffee the heavens had unexpectedly opened. Just bad luck; good run though 🙂
