Welcome to another lovely Monday, the last of the October Mondays for this year!
How are you getting on with your running and other activities? Tell us all about it in the comments 😊😊😊
If you're new here, or just browsing through the community posts, this is a great place to introduce yourself and let us know how you are doing. You’ll find plenty of support and knowledge from your fellow runners here.
I just got back from a bike ride during which I was happily pedalling along (OK, there WAS a bit of a headwind, but it was a nice ride anyway), when the sky darkened, a few spots of rain fell, and I was treated to a stupendously splendid rainbow ahead of me!!! I decided to stop and take a pic, and as I re-holstered my phone the heavens opened and started hurling rain at me 😱 I only had about five minutes left of the ride, but I got soaked right through to the skin 😂😂😂
It reminded me of the London Triathlon back in August, where I cycled into driving rain for half of the bike leg, and got me thinking about some of the other weathers I have endured/enjoyed (I think it's all rather fun really!) during my running career. There was the long run up on the South Downs where I got soaked, dry, then soaked again and saw three rainbows and a bolt of lightning. There was the time I did a 20 miler round Brighton and Hove and it was so hot and sunny I had to stop at Asda to buy some sun cream and a drink - and I had an ice cream on the way back home 😂 And of course there was the 2018 London Marathon in a heatwave, and the Brighton Half last year with the howling gales!!
What's the worst weather you've run or cycled in?
Whatever the weather, enjoy your running, resting, and cross-training!

At least you were 5 minutes from home when it happened, although I feel like once you're soaked through it doesn't matter what happens with the weather, you're not going to get any wetter.
Worst weather I have run in was last year in the first lockdown. I went round the woods by my house, nice and sunny when I set off, hail storm half way though, back sunny again by the time I got home! I think I was more surprised than anything, didn't manage to get a photo of it though.
I have never had a bad weather RUN in the 3 years since I graduated from C25K, however, as I have been cycling since I was 7 there have been few bad bike rides, when I was a teenager I cycled in frost and snow, I was so cold I was almost crying, at the other extreme of weather, I cycled without any water in a temperature of 28C/82F and got home almost in a state of collapse. Those were my teenage days, since then I have always carried water with me and not cycled in snow or ice, the coldest temperature I have ran in is - 6C /21F at Drumpellier Parkrun on 30th November 2019 brrrr.
O dear me roseabi, I have just noticed a video of me running at Drumpellier Parkrun on Saturday morning, its a short video just as the run started, it ends with the tailwalker running slowly.
PS 26th October, this morning at 9.30 the postman delivered my brand new Barcode Bracelet, an hour later my new 25 T-Shirt was delivered by a private delivery firm, I only ordered the bracelet last Friday and the T-Shirt on Saturday, that was quick.
Probably wind driven hail and snow when wearing shorts and a short sleeved t-shirt. Luckily I was wearing a baseball cap to protect the face and eyes... But it still stings!
I’ve run is all manner of weather conditions, from sideways rain, hail, ridiculous wind where I’ve practically been at a standstill, and snow. But I love all those one million times more than the 2 races I ran in 28 degree temperatures. Believe me, if they hadn’t been races, I would not have been running!
So apart from heat, I think running in all adverse conditions is fun! 👏👏👏
My running is just for fun at the moment with all my races behind me for the year. I did a lovely NRC guided trail run this morning. I even had time for a tiny yoga session. Can’t WAIT to get back into a regular routine again!
Ha ha Roseabi, that black sky which skirted around southsea was heading for you. 💧💦🌈 sorry I told it to go elsewhere.
The worse weather I encountered was walking down to do the reindeer run 5k . Me and Oldgirlruns were soaked before it started and many people just didn’t show up.
Running in hailstones was very painful when doing a (not) parkrun with running buddies during lockdown.
Then there are the gales! We certainly have those times when we cannot walk against the wind let alone run into it. But I loved the 5k PB where I ran it all with a Gale behind me thanks to chauffeuring by UpTheStanley .
Who’s want to run on a treadmill when we can have such fun outdoors?
Ah yes Dexy, that Santa run was fun! And my C25K graduation run in 40mph wind at Parkrun. I recall you telling me you’d never run with me again! Tee hee!
I now have about 285km left to run to hit my target of 2021km this year. Barring unforeseen circumstances, I should make it in early December.
I'm also preparing to transition to running in the dark after work for the next few months; the hi-viz vest has come out of the cupboard and my headlamp is fully charged (and I suspect will probably be needed tomorrow evening).
In terms of bad weather, I got caught out in a couple of thunderstorms last year (which did wonders for my finishing time; nothing like a little incentive to get home fast), but generally I've been lucky. In my younger days, I did play rugby in some absolutely horrible conditions and the heavy cotton kit we wore back then just absorbed water. Also, growing up in the Scottish Highlands, walking to and from school in pitch darkness and sub-zero temperatures (sometimes down to -20°C) in the winter wasn't exactly my idea of fun either.
I run in all weather although try and avoid Gale force winds & Lightening!
Heat is the biggest challenge here and I’m not looking forward to losing my daytime runs through Summer and the 5am starts.
I’m on my last 100mile month for the year. I’ve done 6 in a row! 20 miles to go! On track for a 1000+ mile year! Knee niggle gone. Managed a longer run last week and tested out a Maurten gel. Very odd texture but certainly preferred it to Tailwind.
Littlest had a gastro bug at the weekend so I was homebound with him. Read Reborn on the run. Very inspiring! Vomits seem to be the norm for an ultra runner so if I do come down with the bug! Maybe, I will run anyway and channel future me🤮
Spring Trail running here in Western Australia. Photo taken on Friday 😎
Oh no! I’ve got lots of the Maurten energy drink as I bought a mix fuel box to try. I found Tailwind really sweet. My husband reckons the Maurten gel was like Halloween slime 🤣
It was my first gel so nothing to compare but I liked the simplicity of just carrying gels and water 👍🏻
Folkestone HM 2019. Gales, rain, high tide breaking over the path, everything you could imagine to get you wet from the top down and the feet up. Amazingly I won my age category and posted a PB. I think all the more experienced and wiser runners stayed at home that year!! This week I have paused my ridiculous Garmin 10k plan to taper...for a trail 10k (Bedgebury Pinetum) on Sunday. Praying for favourable weather as it can get very muddy there, but then again that's the fun of trail running, a bit of dirt.
Hi roseabi and running friends, I've done my last organised event for the year (GSR last weekend) so I'm concentrating on building up for the virtual HUHM in November. I reckon that having done the GSR, I won't have too much further to run to get up to HM distance again. I'll just add another KM each week over the next 3 weeks, which will bring me up to 18-19 KM.I've joined local running club and had my first two club runs with them on Tuesday and Thursday evenings last week. They tend to split into groups so I'll join whichever group I feel is right on the day. They've got qualified coaches in the club who tend to lead out each group and make sure no-one's left behind. It's a new experience for me to run regularly with other people but I'm enjoying it so far. It's nice to have other like-minded people to talk about running too: sadly my family just don't get running and their eyes tend to glaze over! 🙄
I ran along the seashore yesterday (which I've posted about separately) which is a whole new experience. You have to forget about pace and just concentrate on keeping upright when running on sand and shingle. It does make you appreciate having a stable surface to run on afterwards though! 😁
As for the weather, I don't really mind what the weather's up to when I go out, unless it's really horrible. I'm not a fan of heat and humidity though, and a strong wind isn't very pleasant either, unless it's behind you! 😁
Ooh, well done for joining the club, sounds great! xxx
As for weather, the most spectacular I have run in since starting C25K mid November last year, was when it had frozen so hard that I had to run on frozen ground. It may sound bad, but I actually loved it. Just ran VERY slowly and got weird looks from other people who were doing their best not to fall. Did another frozen ground run afterwards with yaktrax on, but it was a bit annoying as there were also dry patches on which the yaktrax felt rather uncomfortable...
In the meanwhile my plan to reach my first ten miler has been disturbed by an annoying sciatic nerve. I do hope to run again tomorrow, fingers crossed that the nerve remains calm. But I have no idea how to do a ten miler in the time I gave myself. I can of course take longer, but then I can't run my ten miler in the spot where I wanted to run it. Of course, health goes before scenery, but still...
For weather, there are two extremes: hot and cold.
For the cold, I was pelted with graupel (snow pellets) on my first go at 10km. They did sting a bit, but weren't really a problem. I've run in moderately heavy early autumn rain, which was actually not bad at all, but not yet winter rain.
Running in winter mist was counter-intuitive. It was one of those inversion layers, and the humidity meant the conditions felt a lot warmer than they would have been expected to.
And then there's the heat. In the middle of July it was warm and humid together, and that was far more difficult to run in than any other weather condition I've experienced, at least until I'd acclimatised a bit, by which time the heatwave had ended.
I surprised myself by doing a second Half Marathon distance this morning, and on the whole I enjoyed doing it.
I now have my number (365) for the Manchester 10K this Sunday. I don't expect I'll have any problems as I've done many runs at that distance in the last month, and I'm very comfortable with it. When I first entered it (as part of a group from work) back in March it was expected to be in July (having been postponed from 2020). I wasn't as confident at doing medium distances back then. It was further postponed to October 31st.
May you all have the running weather you prefer this week!
That’s a lovely rainbow 😍 and seeing one always make me smile 🙂
I’m starting a 10K training plan this week, the first I’ve done for years! I have a race in December and so it’s time to get serious 💪 I haven’t worked on my 10K time for yonks and I’m really looking forward to it.
Three runs come to mind immediately when I consider horrible weather conditions. A 10K race a few years ago in March and the weather was wet, windy and then hail!. It wasn’t too cold to begin with so I didn’t wear gloves but by the time I’d finished I couldn’t open the bottle of water as my fingers were numb and my eyeballs hurt with the hail 😳 Then my little jaunt earlier this year in Ireland when I got caught out half way with heavier rain and stronger wind that I anticipated and I really thought I might suffer from hypothermia. When I stripped afterwards the clothes make a splat noise when they landed on the floor 😫 The third run was in the heat in Tenerife and I was in the middle of training for my first 10K race and had to do two 10K’s in the week. Blimey, that was hard but it was also the first time I bought and wore shorts for running 😎
This is gorgeous running weather, I love it! But no doubt there will be various weather challenges ahead 🙂
That's an amazing photo! Beautiful.I'll run in pretty much any weather (but not on ice), but am much more picky when I'm cycling - I hate cold hands and feet and don't like the rain driving into my face, give me a hot day every time please! Interestingly, this article about a deadly storm during a 100k Ultramarathon in China popped up on facebook this evening runnersworld.com/races-plac... ; 21 people died in appalling conditions. It certainly puts our UK weather into perspective.
Here's to comfortable and safe running and cycling!
My worst run by far was a short 3km run in the desert as part of a relay team. The heat was excruciating and the event should really have been cancelled. I’ve never felt worse on a run than that one. 🥵
I saw that rainbow too this morning and it’s the first time I’ve ever actually seen the end of one! Right on top of the gaming hall on the pier. 🤩 I wonder if someone in there just won a pot of gold on the machines 😂🤔 💰
Definitely worth getting those soggy socks Roseabi 😂👍
Yikes! I just read an article about this year's Marathon des Sables, talking of races that should have been cancelled. I'm not tempted by races in deserts, you are a better man than me 😊😊😊
I hope you found that pot of gold where the rainbow ends at the pier, the photo looks as if there is about to be a heavy shower by the darkness of the clouds.
I’ve run in all weather hot and cold and I love most of it. The craziest was a full out thunderstorm during the Sulphur Springs 25k trail race in 2019. Lightning close by and so much mud. I fell at least 6 times on the hills. The recent 50k was also very muddy but the rain was much softer than Sulphur was and no falls! As for cold I think the coldest was around -32 where my eyelashes started to ice over. We also ran on a shallow frozen lake last year (that’s the pic here). I’ve had some bad heat runs too. Not really a fan of the extreme heat. But the tailwind and better planning has helped in that area.
I’ve been online marathon shoe shopping recently. What a nightmare! All the shoe names are swirling round my brain. I’ve looked at dozens of YouTube reviews 🙄 🤯
If you mention “marathon” you get all the fast racing shoes coming up. Gaaaagh😫. I think it’s a man thing 😁
I watched a marathon running lady instead who seemed more like me and she ran in a Hoka Bondi X. It has a massive stack height ! 😳. I’d get vertigo
Back to square one 😁
PS. The marathon shoe I was sold at the run shop (after a lengthy gait analysis) is far too hard and inflexible, and I find on checking the shoe’s blurb online that it’s for short races 🙄. Glad I didn’t have to pay for them 😎
I'm looking into some new shoes too! I think a shoe with a generous toe box and enough cush is all that's needed for a marathon. I liked my Saucony Breakthru 3s very much for the Brighton Marathon, didn't notice they were there! Although I'm pretty disappointed that they are already falling apart. But you used to like the Kinvara didn't you? The Kinvara 12s seem pretty good, although I can't find any cheap ones...
I loved my Kinvara 5 to bits (literally) 😁. I ran a marathon in them as I had nothing else, and they were fine despite being 4mm drop and a tad minimal. I later got a pair of the 8’s but they were too narrow and the uppers were like paper. They’re better since version 10 apparently
Good news. I have. Pair of Saucony Endorphin Speed 1 on their way. In the sale but grim colour way 😁. I got pipped at the post for the black ones 🤨. These are 8 mm drop. They get raves so fingers crossed 🤞
I ran a marathon in the Kinvara cos I had nothing else but it’s a bit minimalist. Mind you it’s softer than the Saucony triumph I ran in today! I was after a bit more cushioning as my hip hurts I might try on an endorphin speed or another kinvara I think the Endorphin is 8 mm drop whereas the Kinvara is 4mm
They don’t do Breakthru now I don’t think🤔
Just got in from running 20 miles 😤. Having homemade chilli con carne 😋😋😋 and a massive cuppa tea. Homemade rice pud for dessert on top of berries and banana 😁
Hi fellow runners!2 runs since Sunday,a round the houses 5k but tonight was a club Halloween 7.5k with headtorches up to our nearby castle with bats swooping round us on the moat! Good fun!
Might do a seafront run thurs and we have our 10k race for life Sunday in Southsea 😁
Worst weather! The Chilly Hilly race 10 miler a few years back with 80mph gusts on Tennyson down was an experience but great fun ! Or my 1st HM,Gosport in November 2015, super windy!see victory photo below and interesting hair!🤣 do remember a night time trail run a few years back near Christmas trying to shield from hailstones in Santa hats!but these are the ones we love and remember!
Wonderful photo roseabi , and it's a double rainbow, isn't it? Or is that my dodgy eyes and filthy computer screen?!
I'm feeling pretty wimpy on the weather front (see what I did there?) I've run in temperatures from below freezing to 25°+C. I've run in wind, rain and snow, and on frozen ground when there's just a few cm of snow or icy patches.
However, if there's 30cm+ of snow or thick black ice where even the dog's four-paw drive is failing, I won't risk running. Same goes for thunderstorms as it's forest one way, fields the other. If there were shortcuts to get home, or lots of other people/houses around, I'd maybe feel differently, but as it is, I'm pretty risk-averse.
