Help! I've only gone and been selected

Hi all. A couple of months ago, I applied to run a half marathon for a charity close to my heart. I didn't expect to be selected, and thought that I'd let fate decide, but I've just found out that I have been put in the team.

A bit of background, I've been running on and off for 3 years or so. I've been comfortably running a 5 or 6k a few times a week and I completed a 10k at the end of last year. My enthusiasm has waned for the last couple of months and to be honest, life has got in the way, caring for elderly parents etc.

So I've not run regularly for the last month, I would say, but regular 5k's prior. The race is mid October 2021, and instinctively, I would really like to do it. I think that it would be good for me to have a fresh challenge and to improve my lifestyle. I've been looking at the BUPA beginner 12 week running plan.

My question is, would I realistically be able to complete a half marathon or should I politely decline now?

I would really value your opinions :)

I am sure you will still be able to run that HM in October, there are many training courses and plans for runners who plan to run a half marathon, October is still over 4 months away, good luck.

Absolutely!

It's possible to double your distance every two months (8 weeks) whilst keeping within the 10% rule.

Even if you're only doing the occasional 5km now, doing 21.1 km in four months' time is definitely possible. It will require consistently getting out and doing the runs from whatever Half Marathon training programme you pick.

Ok, that sounds sensible. Thanks nowster

I'd say it depends on whether you are alright running 5k at the moment. You haven't run "regularly" for the last month, but have you done some running?

Starting at 5k now, I think it's practical to build up to HM by mid October so, if you start now, I think you'll get there.

Is the BUPA plan one that starts from 5k?

For what it's worth, I based my answer on the 10% rule. I see that nowster gave some more info on it. You have enough time to build up along with some consolidation along the way.

Hi SkiMonday, thanks for your replies. I’ve not run at all for 2 weeks but was doing a couple of 5 or 6k’s per week before. Before that I was doing the same but 3 times per week.

So yeah, I can run 5k without issue so should have enough time. I hope….

Hi! I’m sure you can. 😀Sounds like you would like to.

I did a similar thing and signed myself up without too much thought. This is my first time trying to organise a training routine around work and family to get ready for a HM September.

Honestly, if I can do it then it’s got to be doable 😊. I really hope you give it a go!

Having the time for training is definitely in my mind. I’ll just have to make time. Thanks Comfortnotspeed 😊

Welcome to the forum!Do you want to do it? If your answer to my question is yes, then my answer to yours is a resounding yes!

The timing is perfect. Start to build back up gently and then follow a twelve week HM plan. Take a look at our pinned posts for all sorts of helpful information - including other training plan options if you're uncertain of whether the Bupa one will suit you.

Your first HM is going to be a PB, no need to strive for a fast HM. Take the training gnetly and focus on distance rather than pace.

Keep posting here and we will be with you all the way. You can do this!!!

Thanks linda9389 😊. I’m definitely not going to go for speed.

You’re right though, I need to research, research, research

I’m following the Nike Run Club half marathon training plan at the moment. It’s for 14 weeks and starts at 5k. There are 5 guided runs to choose from each week including a 5k, a long run and some shorter interval runs. Worth a look and it’s free so that’s a bonus. I’m only aiming for 10 miles but never say never! Good luck with it!

That’s a good call Frizzbomb67 as I’ve run with NRC a lot in the past. I’ll take a look.

I think that you’re right about fate cheekychipmunks. I just hope that my body agrees 😆. Thanks for the support.

You’ll be fine! It’s ages away too! Just to your distance by a km or so each long run but make sure you drop back every 3-4 weeks. Personally I did the distance before I did the race but many only get to 10 miles beforehand. Good luck!

Yes, I'd say that's about the best training window. I'm starting my new plan this week too, my HM is around the same time as yours.. Don't forget as well, you're not obliged to run all the way, you can take walk breaks if you need to, or even run/walk the whole way if you like, I did that for my first HM. Best of luck x

I think if you really want to you can and will 😁. I signed up for a HM with not nearly enough thought but have found my commitment and motivation has improved...I think it's an accountability thing.

You already have a decent running base....life does sound hectic but I am a great believer in making sure you prioritise your own health to ensure you can show up for everyone else. Running keeps my mind in a place that helps me manage day to day stress and demands

I have followed a bit of advice off here ref plans...there really are lots linked on here....sorry I'm not technically minded enough to find it now 🙄

Which HM are you signed up to...mines Cambridge in October

Thanks bubblebird123. I think you're right. Running really does give me some head space and it's really important to keep yourself well. You're no good to anyone otherwise.

It's the Royal Parks HM in London. It seems a long way off but I'm sure time will fly.

Best of luck with yours.
