"For lifelong Cherries [Bournemouth AFC] supporter Andrew Hardiman this season, he laces up his trainers to complete one of lifeβs most gruelling athletic challenges.
The objective for the 28-year-old is clear. When Dom Solanke scores β he runs.
Not just any distance, however - a full marathon is completed in aid of Cancer Research UK for each goal scored."
I think this is a pretty impressive motivational tool!! He's had to do 10 marathons to date, and luckily Dom Solanke has kept his scoring sporadic so far:
βIf he gets a hat-trick, then I think my legs will start shaking with a little bit of fear! But long may he continue scoring and hopefully it helps the club as well as this challenge.β π
At roseabi towers my husband has set up Alexa to tell us to DO SOME PUSH UPS!! three times a day. Admittedly sometimes we just ignore her, but it is a pretty useful reminder to get away from the desk for a little beneficial exercise! What motivational tools have you tried?
As always, if you're new here, or just browsing through the community posts, this is a great place to introduce yourself and let us know how you are doing. Youβll find plenty of support and knowledge from your fellow runners here.
I managed nearly 23k last week which isn't great compared to pre-lockdown 30-40 but at least keeping going. Managed a 5k PR last night which I'm quite pleased with. Wondering about doing back to back runs on successive days now I'm more limited in distance.
What a super-fan that Bournemouth AFC fan must be! I should set a similar challenge to Mr Cheeky and our son. Theyβre Man Utd fans - it would soon see how much! β½οΈπ And what a great idea with Alexa too. I suspect weβd ignore her too, or tell her what to do with her push-ups! π
Iβm still trucking on with RED Jan, Adriene and all my other challenges. Today I did 10k as the weather was fairly benign and itβs forecast to be hideous all week. Itβs given me the ability to do guilt free shorter runs when the wind and squelch invariably return. π¦ π¨
I have been known to say something like that to Alexa... π
Ooh yes, there are plenty of things going on this month to keep us going aren't there!!! Well done, Cheeky! Hmmm yes, running's going to be "interesting" this week πππ
Hi roseabi and running friends. I'm trundling along quite nicely towards John O'Groats and just over 250 miles still to go. On Route 66 I've just got my 70 miles postcard, so about 2,200 miles to go. I ran 11.5k yesterday as part of my HUHM plan, and my plans are now altered so I'll use the HUHM to complete LEJOG at the end of March 2021. All in all, I'm pleased with my progress so far!
Ooooo I wonder if I could do that too David_G ? Itβs a great idea! Iβll need to do some careful calculations - it would be a fantastic incentive to keep going at the notorious 17km! π
Thanks Cheekychipmunks! π I had everything down on a spreadsheet so I just played around with the days and distances until it all added up!ππ I could put one together for you too quite easily if that would help?
Hi roseabi and VRBs. Wow that's some commitment, he must really be on the edge of his seat when he's watching a match great thing to do though.
Yes I'd be telling Alexa where to go π€£ But it's interesting how we can motivate ourselves, I leave the yoga mat on the settee so I can't possibly "forget" to do my practice π§ββοΈ
Last week I only managed 7k partly due to all the snow but mainly due to my dodgy knee not liking my 7k. βΉοΈSo after much thought and reading everyone's suggestions (thankyou) I've decided to stop running for a couple of weeks and see if the knee improves.I've got my 30 day Yoga practice to help keep me motivated, plus I've set up a daily exercise plan complete with β boxes (I love a β box π) to work on knee, hip and core strength. I'll still be doing lots of dog walking and I'll try to go for extra walks on what would have been run days. I've just got a couple of hours gardening done which was so good, bit tomorrow it's pouring rain all day... so that extra walk might not happen π
Now that is a test of loyalty! My hat is off to him! As for Alexa I already have enough pressure from my phone calendar reminders that itβs βworkout time!β π³
Itβs harder to get out in the early morning dark during these shorter days and I stay out of the woods now too in the dark because of the coyotes Iβve seen lately (twice last week which is rare) but I did get my first HM of β21 done finally, which Iβm happy with. And my friend texted me a segment that he is right behind me right on my street, so I was out to defend it this morn π
I saw that article too - madness!!! About the same level of madness as setting Alexa to drive your workouts π±I'm not sure what motivates me to run ... it just happens! One goal after another seems to do it. And I have no problem coming up with new goals. I guess I'm very lucky. HU helps a lot too.
Motivation for strength work is a whole different thing. Especially the stuff I don't like doing. I have the same issue regarding stretching. For both, my motivation usually comes from pain or injury, but as soon as that improves my regime slips again. Must try harder, but any hints and tips are most welcome!!!
I have an app that reminds me to take my medication, and in the past I tried using it to remind me to do this or that exercise too, but it just kept getting too much!! I definitely think these things only work if used sparingly.
This is the problem I have had with physiotherapists in the past, you know how they tend to give one a huge list of exercises that take hours to do? Impossible! Little and often is the key I think, and also choose things you do like doing, if at all possible!
Still on the remedial trail...3 runs totalling 12k is a start!! Adding half a stone in weight hasnβt helped! I think head down, keep quiet and plod on is the right policy! No coyotes up here anyway π
I don't have many motivational tricks, but trying to make it out in the winter early enough to see the sunrise works for me.
I haven't been running as much during the past 10 days. I've been taking advantage of the weather and have been skiing instead. I did make it out for a 5 k on Monday, though. And rain is forecast for the end of the week, so I need to make the most of it while I can. I guess Storm Christoph is heading our way. Norwegian authorities don't tend to mention storms unless they consider them really serious.
You never know when your fitness will come in handy so itβs as well to be on the ball
I just got a call asking me to volunteer at the vaccine hub this Sunday πββοΈπββοΈπββοΈπββοΈ β. Tin hat time π π·
I have no idea whatβs involved π€·ββοΈ I didnβt like to ask π
Not sure I'd call it a motivational trick, I'm just more pig headed π€ When I decide I'm going to do something, like currently sticking to some workout every day, min 80 squats at least, I just do it. If that means getting up before my normal alarm time of 4.45... so be it. Not sure how long it will last though π€£
