How are you? How's your running/crosstraining/resting been going? Tell us all about it in the comments! π
I saw an article the other day about a man who ran a half marathon wearing 90 shirts!
'He told Newsweek that the most shirts he wore during training was 72, and that was just within the last couple of weeks.
"It definitely got increasingly harder," he said. "I was able to get myself dressed until about 60 shirts, and anything above that I just didn't have the range of motion to physically put the shirts on myself."'
π€ What's the maximum number of shirts YOU have worn for a half marathon? Or for any run? How many running shirts do you own? π I reckon I have never run in more than two at once, and definitely only one for a HM!
By the way, if you're new here, or just taking a look and getting comfortable before posting, hello! This post is a great place to introduce yourself if you're ready to do so.
π€£π€£ runners never cease to amaze me. Despite my ever increasing collection of shirts, I canβt compete with that. The most Iβve ever worn on a much shorter run is 3. Base layer, shirt, running jacket.
Crikey. 2 GSR, 1 New Forest, 1 Great Bristol, 1 Virtual Vitality, 3 parkrun, 1 poppy run (not tech) 2 vests, 4 long sleeve zip up (2 base layer), 4 long sleeve crew and 4 plain T-shirts. Not as many as most I am sure. But it no longer fits in 1 drawer!
I'm sure they are breeding! I haven't run further than 8k since since the GSR in October, and I've just confirmed my entry in Vitality 10k. I will need to get some longer distances in so that I can come anywhere near my predicted time!
Seriously? π³π³ On the coldest, windiest day Iβve worn a long sleeved technical shirt, a hoodie and my thin hi viz jacket. Couldnβt deal with more than that, heat and bulk-wise.
As regards my training, weβll bypass that one! Bimbly runs on the treadmill and PR have been the name of the game. Burghley 7 miler with some HUers next weekend, so thatβll be fun though.
Running was going well! Iβm up to week 6 on my marathon plan with 34miles scheduled for this week.
Hubby went up to Perth on Friday to a friends 50th and is now a close contactπ. So far negative tests but he has full on man flu ( His words) 3 out of 5 kids now have sore throats and Iβve basically had symptoms for two years! Think itβs going to be a long week and not on the running front.
Iβve got two run down under t-shirts and at this rate it will take me a good few years to run around Australia π€£ never worn them together. Didnβt know that was a thing!
I think Iβll stick with two tops maximum. If I need anymore than that itβs too cold outside for me to run haha
I am now (again) in training (if I say it I have to do it!!) for a half marathon. Itβs been too long since the last and watching from the sidelines yesterday at the Chelmsford Half was equal measures great fun and disappointing that I wasnβt running. Luckily the Southend half isnβt that far away in the calendarβ¦..
Do we count bras as a layer? Mine feels like a layer. So in the winter the max could be, a bra, a compression vest (although i had to chuck them as they got a bit sweaty and i canβt find any replacements), a long sleeved top, a short sleeve top and maybe a jacket. So thatβs 5 π€£
As for what i haveβ¦i wonβt include bras but I must have at least 25 tops plus my lovely, snuggly Winter Series top. There will probably be another one next week when i donβt get a ballot place again! π€£
Oh crikey, yes, hydration vests! I donβt think Iβd wear 5 layers with one of those though.
It was a bit of a finger in the air job with the tops as I was at work but then tonight I thought more about it: 5 parkrun tops, 2 Jogle/Lejog tops, GSR, Bath Half, Two Castles, 2 long sleeves, 4 strappy tops, 1 GSR training top, 2 plain tops, 2 βsorry butβ London Marathon tops, 3 running bras, youngest kitten has my Vitality 10k top, and the Winter Series top, so yes, actually 26 tops π±π€£
Hi roseabi and running friends! I think the most Iβve ever worn at once would be a base layer, running shirt and a light jacket. I canβt begin to imagine wearing 90 π³ I do have an entire chest of drawers devoted to running stuff, so heaven knows how much is in there! Oh, and donβt get me started on all the running shoes in the bottom of the wardrobe eitherπ€£Iβm not doing much running at the moment due to a niggle in my right Achilles, but itβs getting better so I hope to get out again soonππ€ For now Iβm just doing strength exercises and walking. I did have a sports massage last week which helped a lot.
Iβm now in Weymouth for a friendβs birthdayπ₯³π₯ for a few days. I intentionally left my running gear behind so I wasnβt tempted to go running until my legβs ready for it. Itβs so frustrating π but itβs the right thing to doπ
Errr, why? Just why? I don't own that many tops - let alone running tops (which will be well over 50% of my total). I think two layers is my max and I don't see that changing any time soon!Still sticking to my (your) HM plan with five weeks to go to Kew half.
Panicking about my upcoming ride distance but also conflicted as I don't want to risk injury before my half!!! It may be a very slow 100k ride π€£ (on the bike I definitely favour three layers right now)!!!
Haha obviously youβd need lots of different sizes to do this π Iβd never get all of my tops on together as they are similar sizes. Are shirts the same as tops? If so, I do have quite a few although Iβve never counted them, I darenβt. I have a cold weather collection and a warm weather collectionβ¦..and then thereβs the in-between collectionβ¦.. I pick tops up everywhere I goβ¦.
I never wear more than two at the same time even on the coldest day. I hate the feeling of clothes feeling tight and restrictive and if I could get away with running in just my underwear I would (in the summer of course π₯΅)
But hats off to that guy, Iβm sure it was really hard to run in that lot!
In other news, Iβm still faffing about which marathon training plan I will go with. Just when I find one I like I see something I donβt like π Iβve sort of started training for Bath (again) today but itβs only to keep me ticking over until April when I start the FM training proper. Iβve found a plan that will incorporate Bath soβ¦β¦ π€
I think Americans use "shirts" for "tops". My collection is quite varied size-wise, partly because of missing out on my preferred size at races, also because sometimes "my size" turns out to be a bit tight... or massively baggy!! Good point though - must start with the smallest ones!
You could merge two or three plans to get all your favourite bits πππ
Iβve just remembered that Iβve got a C25K Tee from yonks ago and when I put it on to show my husband he said βdid that shrink in the wash?β ππ β¦.. cheekyβ¦..
Wow that's crazy, 2 is plenty for me! Two with a hydration vest and I end up with a large hydration vest shaped very soggy sweat patch. I hate to think of what it would be like under 90 shirts.
Fair play though, I bet he felt an amazing sense of achievement when he got to the end.
I only ever wear one T-shirt, whatever the season and whatever the weather. Iβm always surprised when I see runners in sweatshirts, anoraks, etc. How incredibly fit they must be to not get hot.
The picture reminded me of Toby Jones in the tv drama βMarvellousβ where he layered up in similar fashion. Wonderful watch by the way π₯°
I like to wear the minimum but a base in winter of a merino long-sleeve with tee over, then run jacket - which usually ends up tied round my waist. I wear two hats sometimes too Roseabi
I have many running tops - most of which are race ones Iβve won so they donβt count πβΊοΈ
Do you colour match your two hats or go for a complete contrast?
Iβve been favouring a contrast during the dark days of winter. Also to be more visible of course Iβve got a pink Buff. My son says I look like a match βΊοΈ
I tend to go with this fetching combo. It's an ear-covering cycling hat with a peak, and a stripy woolly hat. No thought goes into colour coordination! π
Ha now I donβt feel so strange with my layering π. Anything below -20 and I have 4 layers. On one bitterly cold windy run I managed 5 or6. Plus two glove layers, a hat and hood πI know. I like to run in my own personal climate. But itβs warming up now and today was just 3 layers in the freezing rain. Plus temps this week are promising!
My Berlin mara plans are fading with the current global tensions but Iβve not abandoned them yet. September is a ways away still. My local 50k is still booked just in case. Not complaining at all, just working out how to plan for training this year.
-20Β°C or -20Β°F? Never mind! Both are unknown here.
The difference between that sort of cold and the sort of cold we have in the UK is the humidity.
When it's that cold, the air is pretty dry and a good thermal insulator. You can layer up and not get too sweaty. Moisture wicking fabrics work as they're supposed to.
In a typical British winter, the relative humidity is often in the 70-80% area, even when it's near freezing. If you layer up you're going to get sweaty because the sweat won't evaporate. If you don't, the cold will get you due to the moisture content of the air making it "raw".
I've had one experience of -10Β°C here and that was actually quite pleasant because the air was still and dry.
-20C π Yes it is quite pleasant up to -10 or so. Beyond that my hands freeze up. As long as I keep them warm I can manage ok. Hand warmers have been a blessing the last couple of years.
Sunday afternoon's weather forecast looks like it's ideal for a long run: 9Β°C, partial cloud, and a bit of a breeze.
I'm now comfortable with doing a slightly longer run as one of my routine weekday runs. I'm getting better at doing hills. The rubbing feeling at the bottom of the Achilles has gone away.
Its starting to feel as if I could extend beyond the HM distance. I've even plotted out a 24km route I might do if I feel up to it on Sunday. There are lots of bail out points from 10km onwards.
It's tender in the area of the bump but I'm feeling fine. A bit of a bruise and a couple of scrapes on the noggin. Nothing that will slow me down. (I have been checked over several times by a community nurse who also happens to be my partner.)
Hi lovely roseabi and VRBs, don't know about you, but I get hot and panicky even looking at that picture!
I don't believe I've ever worn more than two layers for running, in temperatures at around -4Β°C. Skiing years ago, I think it was on honeymoon in Aspen, it dropped to -24Β°F and I worn 7 or 8 layers, plus scarf, balaclava and hat.
In summer I once stripped off my vest and continued running at the side of a major road in crop top-style running bra and shorts only. I certainly don't have the right body for doing that but fortunately didn't cause any accidents! ππ€£
I have way too many tops I could wear for running, bought over several decades when I was going to take up exercising but never really did! I need to sort out and donate the ones that don't get worn.
As for running, I now seem to be back on the way to longer distances. 16.25km yesterday, an unplanned 452m elevation fest on a mix of "interesting" forest trails, dirt tracks and single-track roads.
