A big "HEY!" to everyone who's just joined this lovely community, and a "hey what's up?!" to the rest of you π Tell us your news!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've had quite a break from running this past week, I'd been spending tΜΆoΜΆoΜΆ ΜΆmΜΆuΜΆcΜΆhΜΆ quite a lot of time recording my flute exam, and I've also been feeling pretty manky with a cold (how? how? did I catch a cold???), so I ended up just doing one run, an easy 7 km on Saturday.
I'm not bothered though, sometimes it's good to take a chill pill and realise that running can wait! Maybe some of you can't even get out much at the moment anyway? Locked down and/or stuck on the Injury Couch? I'm hatching plans for my next marathon - a speedy solo Spring seafront session π It could happen, going to start easing into training soon anyway. 2021 is coming up fast, but for now it's nice just to dream a little!
As always, if you're new here, or just taking a look and getting comfortable before posting, hello! This post is a great place to introduce yourself if you're ready to do so.
Running, resting, walking, cycling, kung fu... whatever you're up to have a great week, everyone!!!

Hi roseabi and lovely running friends! I hope you're all keeping well and managing to get out when you can for a bit of exercise.
I've been concentrating on getting the miles in for my LEJOG challenge - so far I'm just over 300 miles towards virtual John O'Groats. It's a great challenge, so well organised and the Facebook group are very supportive too.
I ran 10K on Saturday for Mo-Running (the running version of Movember), to raise awareness of men's health. That left me 6 miles short of 300 for LEJOG, so of course I had to get out again. I did another 6K on Saturday afternoon and an additional 5K on Sunday for (not)Parkrun. Not that it was important, but the 10K was in 1:02:29 and the 5K in 0:28:39 so I was very pleased with those.
This week I'm going to concentrate on running more slowly to avoid risk of injury by overdoing things. I'm enjoying reading '80/20 Running' by Matt Fitzgerald when I'm not running so that's what I'm trying to follow. It's surprisingly difficult to run slowly though!
Other than that, I've got most of my Christmas shopping done online which I'm super-pleased about π
Great work, David. I know what you mean about adjusting your running pace, it's harder than you think! I am in awe of the fact you have done your "C" shopping.... we have a flurry of Autumn birthdays until early November in our family so never even think about Christmas until those are out of the way!
Morning! Your post came at just the right time, as I refocus on my running again. I've not run for a couple of weeks - half term away with the family (yey!) and then helping my Mum move house last week ahead of lockdown means things have been a bit crazy! Finally got out for a quick trot this morning to remind my legs how they work.....
Back to work, kids still at school, some "normal" routine being restarted. Not dreaming of much to be honest, just getting through the next weeks without ending up isolating will be a bonus. A bit sad that it's come to that, but there we are.
I am, however, looking for my next virtual race - another 10k soonish and a HM in the Spring is my target. So that's something to aim for at least!
I did get another medal at least, a couple of weeks ago, Town & Gown 10k!
Good luck cheekychipmunks ππ€ It would be such a shame if anyone else came down with it now and you have to isolate againβΉοΈ Have you got your sense of taste and smell back yet?
Iβm feeling fine BC, but Iβm well cheesed off with not being able to taste my beloved food. This morning I sucked a lemon and had some Tobasco just for interest! At least Iβm aware of the sensation, albeit with no flavour! Plenty of rest being done here, donβt worry!
Pleased to hear it!! Running will wait. I am having a post run energy fix now; home made lemon meringue pie, made with real lemons, of course, and condensed milk. It would have been my late mother in lawβs 100 birthday yesterday so we decided to celebrate with her favourite sweet. Any excuse π. It has been a good day with Mrs BC getting the consultantβs go ahead to resume driving. I have lined up a car for her; and hidden my keys π
Ahh good news for Mrs BC! And what an excellent idea celebrating your late mother-in-lawβs 100th birthday. She would have approved. Sounds delicious! π
Good luck with the Flute exam roseabi - I canβt imagine a cold makes the flute any easier never mind running!!
Like many others - the postman (heβs a nice chap, we often chat) has just brought me my Vitality 10k medal and top so thatβs hopefully the first of many. Looking forward to running with actual people at some point next year but for now Iβm just plodding along around Southend on Sea as has become usual this year!
Probably could do with a new βgoalβ to keep me going and motivated so Iβm very interested in anything you may plan for December based on the suggestion of relay/2020 themed things to see the year out.
Hello! The cold did not help, although at least it isn't a 'proper' snuffly cold, just a bit of fatigue, achy muscles, and sore puffy eyes (not a good look for the video, sigh).
Thank you for the good wishes!! xxx
Awesome news about the t-shirt and medal - congratulations. The top in particular looks spiffing πππ
We will be putting our heads together to come up with a fun December challenge or two...
What a clever cat to win all those medals roseabi. And good luck with your flute exam.
I had a great October, in which I ran 10k after far too long, run the virtual vitality with awesome buddies to get lovely bling and my 2nd favourite race shirt, and almost completed my running bingo card.
So November sadly means a stop to our post ( not) parkrun breakfast with Southsea buddies, but thereβs nothing to stop us (not) running around the same time and herring each other on.
My challenge for November is βMy Poppy Runβ where me and UpTheStanley will run 10k and Oldgirlruns will run 5k in aid of the Royal British Legion. We will be doing this in poppy shirts on Armistice Day to finish before 11.00.
Thanks for the inspiration Dexy5! I thought Iβd signed up for Poppy Run 2020 but apparently notβΉοΈ Iβve now registered and Iβm aiming to do 11.11 km on Wednesday!πββοΈ
I donβt work on Wednesday any more so Iβve got plenty of time to trundle along the seafront at Bognor ππ I might even treat myself to an ice creamπ¦when I finish!π
Good luck Dexy, UTS and OGR, weβll be running together in spirit!πββοΈπββοΈπββοΈπββοΈ Iβm not allowed to travel home to pick up last yearβs Poppy Run t-shirt so Iβll see if I can be creative and design myself a βrunning numberβ bib for the day!
Iβve got some magnets from Runr which I think youβve mentioned before? They worked very well for the virtual Vitality 10,000 so theyβll be pressed into service again!
My flute gave me up some years ago!! Beautiful instrument.
I am on the HM trail again; plan downloaded (and age adjusted) so all set. Not a race, just me up in the woods. I did one 10 mile run last month, but have decided to build up steadily, so long run was 12 last week and 14 planned for Wednesday. All of the rehab has made me stronger this year so π€
Breath support and embouchure; canβt manage either now ...I used to enjoy sneaking into church when there was nobody around; it was like playing the building! Ancient history!!
It is your plan that I have downloaded; worked for my first attempt, so thanks π
Iβve been having a rest week too, after my half marathon excitement last week, and have also managed to come down with a cold. Feeling a bit devoid of a goal right now, so I am going to focus on trying to achieve 800km (500 miles) running by the end of the year. Only another 50k to go, so not too much pressure and hopefully I can enjoy it.
Reminds me of the last lines of the Flanders and Swan An Ill Wind AKA Mozart's Horn Concerto where the final revenge on the horn-stealing neighbour is to
Hi roseabi hope your health improves and the flute exam goes well. I started in June 2019. Mentioning my age then of 73 you replied age is just a number. A comment that's kept me running - thanks.
Went through the stage of everything planned. Now its roughly street runs of 5k - 10k - 5k with 2 days rest inbetween, ok maybe 1 day sometimes. To break the routine I do different versions of those - just a run as in no watch, easy, hard, interval, hills and a mixture. Time is ok (for me) 32/34 mins for 5K and 70 mins for 10k ( I select at 7K how easy or hard to make the last 3K to finish on time) The result is I'm starting to enjoy running now, in the past it was don't like running but like the benefits. Next target do away with the watch more times.
I have memories of one of my offspring learning flute. (Note the word fond does not precede memories.) It's a bit like listening to someone learning violin. Then they start to get quite good. About grade 5 and 6 it becomes a pleasure to listen to until mid teenage when they give up and swear never to play again.
I've been too lethargic lately - I've been running and covering the distances, but cant really be bothered putting in a great deal of effort or energy.
So, I cast my mind back to C25K days and the sheet determination and motivation I had then, and gave myself a good talkin to. I am now working on improving my pace and pushing myself that little bit more on 5k and 10k runs.
My pace seems to be improving and I am enjoying this new challenge. π
An enforced break here after a funny turn about 10 days ago.
Still waiting for an MRI to determine if it was stroke or hemiplegic migraine. Delay is due to not being able to find out what my stapedectomy prosthesis (replacement ear bone) is made of and whether it is MRI compatible.
On the plus side, blood tests showed I have normal liver function, no inflammatory markers, normal blood count and excellent kidney function for my age!
Been cycling and walking with hubby but no solo running or driving allowed yet. Going slightly mad!!!!!
Hope your exam results are all you hoped for rosabi! When do you find out how you did?
We've had some very different weather lately. Snow and -12 with layers one day, and +16 sunshine and shorts the next. It's made for some amazing trail runs. I've started to explore some of my favorite spots again and last week had a run through a quiet wood when we were surprised by a group of deer passing by, then we found a little baby Brown Snake. This week we tried a different location and it was just as beautiful but with so many hills that my running pal felt like tackling, including a ski hill twice at the front and back of a 20k - I think he's setting up for something big as he is turning 40 next year. Got my hill training in spite of my best efforts. As for goals/dreams, I still have my entrance for next years deferred Sticks N Stones 50k, and so that's something to work towards again. Other plans are still up in the air.
Great work on the ski hill. It's nice to run in nature, isn't it? My mother, who is Norwegian through and through (I'm not) can't take it, and just the thought of seeing a snake keeps her out of the forests. I love seeing wildlife.
Yes I love wildlife also. The thing I love about the trail runs is the anticipation about what you will find in the woods or by the lake. You never know until you crest the next hill.
Good luck with your flute exam. My daughter sent off her grade 4 singing recently. Ran 10k and a couple of 3/4Ks so far want to get that 10 miles I missed out on,not realising 16k is so near to it, this month. And then push on to a HM in the new year. Hoping to get myself on LeJog too.
Good luck with the flute exam Roseabi!Iβve been enjoying the same old 3 day routine for years now and it seems to work for me, Iβm focusing on 5 and 10k speed (as usual π ) and yesterday I bagged a new 5k PB out of the blue. π
I needed a new target so thanks to David_G who ran this recently, I signed up for the Movember 10k which Iβm really looking forward to.
Hi Roseabi, I thought Iβd just have a gentle running week this week after my first half marathon last week so the aim is a gentle 5,7,10k this week. The 5 k was lovely what I hadnβt bargained for was a very brisk 6mile walk yesterday afternoon with my husband! Still itβs all miles for LEJOG04 too. In the run up to Christmas I am intending to build up my stamina 1k at a time between 16k to 21k on my long run each week and complete the half marathon again.πππ
Beautiful cat. I had one just like him/her, with slightly less white hair on his chest. I hope you recover soon from your cold. I understand you're wondering how you got it. I asked myself the same thing when I got my cold in July. When's your flute exam?
I expect to do 4 runs this week. I have a lot of work on, especially today, so I swapped my long run today for this week's speed run. I've been doing intervals for the last few weeks, and I'm 20 seconds away from my (not)parkrun PB from July.
Awwwww kitties π» Thank you! This cold is most perplexing, not to mention annoying!! The exam was a remote one which involved videoing myself "in performance" of four pieces and then uploading to the exam website. It was very hard work! I submitted it on Thursday, so just waiting (more anxiously than I would like!) to be given the verdict!!
Hope your results exceed all your expectations roseabi ! I love that you have this year's medals on display on your desk.
I'm dreaming of being able to run π. My calf is improving, but given that I thought that a couple of weeks ago, ran 10k and then went back to square one, I'm trying to be sensible for a change. It's OK. I've been putting together a plan for the ultra in May (51k) - I love creating a new plan - and at the moment it's set to start on 23rd November, so I'm going to try to wait another week before running. In the meantime, I still need to get the last 407/607 kilometres of cycling done (for 3000 mile/5000km challenges) so I've no excuse for sitting around.
Thanks Linda!! I passed, so now I get to move on to Grade 7, daunting πππ
I'm not much of a bling person, but I do like to look at them for a while at least!
Everything is crossed for you!!!!!! It's so nice to have a plan isn't it! Mine starts on the 23rd too, hope we will be kicking off together πππ
I'm so in awe of your cycling adventures, I really must woman up and get on my bike π
Congratulations. New pieces and a new plan, exciting times!!! Hmmm, not sure my cycling adventures are that awesome, but they're a brilliant stand in for running π. I can't tell you how many times I have thought its criminal that your lovely bike doesn't get out more often though πππ
Congratulations on passing that flute exam! Iβve not posted recently because Iβve cut my mileage back a lot due to finishing my HM training plan and being very busy with work. However yesterday I signed up for the Leicestershire HM on Feb 28th so here we go again! Training plan starts today, trying out a Garmin coach one this time. Need some motivation for the winter months ππΌπͺπ»ππ»ββοΈ
