Hi everyone!!

Sorry this is late!!! The usual lockdown confusion, then throw a Bank Holiday into the mix, and I'm all at sixes and sevens... πŸ˜„

How have you been getting on this past week? Tell us all about it!!! 😊😊😊

After managing to run a personal best 1K during the Speed Challenge, and a 10K pb back in January, I have decided to update some of my other (somewhat dusty) pbs this year. I declared on Ju-Ju's May to the Max Quest over on Bridge healthunlocked.com/bridgeto... that I would attempt a 5K pb this month. And last week I did it!!! Go me πŸ˜‚ Half Marathon next. Strava thinks I got a pb this year at the Brighton Half, but Strava is wrong (GPS glitch).

Speaking of Strava, what do you think about the recent changes?

In other news, I had my latest race cancellation last week - the London Triathlon has bitten the dust, sadly. They have given everyone a free deferral, so fingers crossed for next year! Naturally I am planning to do the triathlon by myself, on or near the planned date of August 9th, so I'll be diving into the sea soon to get training! It looks like it's going to be warm all week, so I'm hoping the sea will take on a more favourable temperature... Anyone else working on solo races at the moment?

If you're new here, or just taking a look and getting comfortable before posting, hello! This post is a great place to introduce yourself if you're ready to do so.

If you are interested, there are plenty of workouts you can do at home from the YouTube library over on Strength & Flex, why not take a look!

Stay safe, and happy trainings!

Morning! Well done on the 5k PB! Shame about the triathlon.

In a similar vein, I've been sticking with my Eastnine "faster 10k" plan and it's going well. Great coaching throughout each training run, which I really need - the voice in my ear - to keep me going and I am getting faster. I did "not parkrun" this weekend for the first time, just a regular 5k at the best pace I could manage and it was my fastest 5k in nearly a year! Second fastest female who took part. Coming in at 25.57, it was only 2 seconds slower than my parkrun PB, so I was really pleased but boy I had to push it.

Back to the training plan now. I'm not training for anything in particular, but I like the structure of following it. Gets me out there and keeps things varied as well.

Well done on the PB. I’m having a rest from running this week.

Our running club put us into teams and we had challenges to do and scored points based on the daily exercise we did. So a run was 3 points, bike ride incl exercise bike 2 points and a walk was 1 point. There were also bonus points to be had. Last week it was bonus points for the bingo card. I also ran 6 days out of 7. 3 days were my usual running days and the other days were very short runs a mile or less.

One of the activities on the bingo card was a hill. So I did a tough hill last Tuesday but all week the back of my heel was hurting.

One of my team members, who has had a lot of injuries said it looks inflamed.

This week I’m resting doing stretching exercises, applying an ice pack and ibuprofen gel.

On the positive side my team won. I was really pleased as I’ve never been in a winning team before.

The team challenges resume in 2 weeks.

Hi roseabi I’ve been continuing my Run Streak - yesterday was day 69. It was supposed to be the Vitality London 10000 so I ran a virtual version along with many of our friends here on HU. I managed to get under an hour so I was pleased with thatπŸ‘ I’d run 5K on Saturday in under 28 minutes on Saturday so I’ll be sure to run slower this week!

I’m aiming for a longer run tomorrow and then to build up to running a solo HM by my birthday in AugustπŸ™‚πŸ€ž It’s going to be a bit of a challenge running without crowds to cheer me on but can’t be helped😊

Take care everyone, stay safe🌈and run happy!πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈπŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ

Thanks Roseabi!πŸ™‚ I’ve actually gone and done a HM distance this morning😳😊 I really didn’t mean to, but I got to 18k and decided to go for it!

I’ll post a run report on here later on todayπŸƒβ€β™‚οΈπŸ‘

I only ran once last week, which seems to have done the trick for my dodgy ankle. On Saturday I started my own 5 k speed challenge, following your model, and my first time was pretty decent, so it will eventually get pretty tricky.

Now that the weather's warmer, I'll probably start running in the forests soon. I've already started this year's urban orienteering. Because of Covid-19, they launched it 2 months early, and it has been a huge success.

roseabi profile image
roseabiUltramarathon in reply to C3PO

Oh that's great news about the ankle, '3PO!!! Good luck with that 5k, I think it's great to push yourself from the start 😊😊😊

How fabulous that they did that with the orienteering!!!

I've always used the free version of Strava. Most of the changes aren't that restrictive.

I'll just wait for the dust to settle before I decide if I'm going to go for a paid service.

I also have only ever had free Strava - I honestly haven't noticed a difference! 😊

Hi roseabi , Bank Holidays always throw me too. I needed to be reminded that today was Tesco Tuesday! Huge queue to get in today too. πŸ‘Ž

Congratulations on your 5k PB! You’re a superb athlete - a triathlete at that! Sounds like fun. πŸ˜€

As for my week, like David_G , I ran the Virtual London Vitality 10000 yesterday too. It was disappointing not to be able run it for real as quite a few of us had hotels booked for Sunday and were planning a meet-up and a jolly. πŸŽ‰πŸ₯‚πŸΊ Never mind, there’s always next year! 🀞🀞

I ran around Bristol instead. What a morning. 😍 Out before the inevitable throngs of people so I wouldn’t cause social distance anxiety, and while it was still relatively (but not very) cool. Happily I ran a PB. 1:16:20, which I know to you gazelles is seriously snail-like, but to me it’s flying! πŸ˜… It was my late Dad’s birthday too, so I’m sure he was spurring me along, and I dedicated the run to him. ❀️

Apart from that, I had my worst run ever on Saturday. Truly hideous, and my slowest 5k since graduating C25K! Even slower than the hills of Lyme Park or Ashton Court PRs! It was windy as heck and I wasn’t in the mindset. Still, it enabled my fab run yesterday, so all good. πŸ‘

I’ve been continuing honing my yoga crows and this morning I flew for 20 seconds. I counted to 22, but I think I sped up towards the end, wanting to achieve the elusive 20 seconds so badly! πŸ˜…

Just a few gentle runs for me with my dog this week I think. πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸ• 🐾

Thank you, and yes triathlons are huge fun, I recommend!

Wow, you are on fire!! Massive well done for 10k and crow pbs!!!!!!!

Love the pic 😍. Shame about the triathlon, but I have no doubt you'll smash a virtual event having seen your determination and success with your other PB challenges. Good luck with the sea swimming.

No running for me still. Tender foot, below the second metatarsal which had the stress fracture. Bone feels absolutely fine, even if I press really really hard, so I'm pretty sure it's not fractured again. Something's not right though and with all races cancelled there seems no point pushing it. Great Run Solo very kindly let me reduce my target distance so even that temptation is gone.

I've been busy buying more cycling gear - I don't half get through clothing cycling every day in this hot weather. Someone put the idea in my head that maybe I could try for a 100 mile ride ... I do need a target and a plan, and having hit the 100k ride with no running challenge in sight .... well, let's just say I'm tempted 😍. I'll be using every bit of Strava that I can (I was already a paid up summit member anyway).

roseabi profile image
roseabiUltramarathon in reply to linda9389

I was sitting by the sea yesterday pondering swimming 1500 metres in it - seems like a long way at the moment!!

Sorry to read that the foot is still troubling πŸ˜₯ That was nice of Great Run Solo!

I just got a new saddle for my bike, which I have yet to put to a proper test but it seems a lot better than the one that came with the bike. I've been wearing my tri suit because it's the only thing I have with padding πŸ˜„ I reckon, as you say, a spare one is necessary!!

100 miles do it do it do it 😍😍😍😍😍😍

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathon in reply to roseabi

1500 metres? Crikey, that's a long way in a pool, let alone the sea! Having said that, I reckon I could contemplate it too. But that's as far as I'd get πŸ˜‚

I find the saddle on my son's bike much more comfortable than the one on my own bike. You wouldn't think so to look at it - it looks evil with no padding and much smaller than mine. Hope your new one works out. Padded shorts are vital though. I've ordered some better ones this time, just to see if I notice the difference on a 5 hour ride πŸ˜ƒ

roseabi profile image
roseabiUltramarathon in reply to linda9389

I wasn't too worried about it for the triathlon, where we swim in the river dock and it's apparently pretty calm and sheltered, but the sea is more daunting! Slow and steady 😊😊😊

My saddle looks a bit like that, but it's definitely squidgier than the one that came with the bike, and I put it on myself which meant I could fiddle around with the positioning to my satisfaction without feeling rushed. I also lowered it a little bit cos my creaky hip was making it tricky to get onboard πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Phew, two pairs of shorts for a 5 hour ride I reckon πŸ˜„

linda9389 profile image

Sorry to hear about the foot Linda, they're so complex because of all the little bones and tendons so no wonder we have problems with them πŸ™„ they get a lot of pounding.

I cant imagine doing a 100 mile bike ride. Wouldn't your bum get really sore? 😫

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathon in reply to Irishprincess

Padded shorts help. 100km wasn't too bad, but 100miles is quite a bit further - hence ordering a slightly more expensive pair! It's not so much numbness, it's the chafing ... 🀐😱

Oh I forgot as well πŸ‘€. You are definitely in PB zone now. Might as well get em all! Go you!

I’m mixed on the Strava changes. I get that they are feeling the pinch like everyone else but I just think there could be a nicer/better way for them to implement these things. So I just ignore segments now since I am not top ten on speed in my β€˜hood :) it seems monthly distance was removed too? All this being said, its hard to complain when its free!

The newer trail runs have been really fun to explore. And a friend recommended a trail app called trailforks which looks pretty good. So far I’ve been using a combo of Google maps and onthegomaps to work out my new routes.

It is a full heatwave here with 31 feeling like 35 degrees today. When your knees sweat you know its hot πŸ₯΅

roseabi profile image

Gotta catch 'em all!

Yeah, I'm not fussed about Strava, I haven't noticed any difference πŸ˜„

Ooh, thank you! I've just had a quick go with onthego, of which I had not heard - seems good!!!

Sweaty knees, omg!!!!

Decker profile image
DeckerUltramarathon in reply to roseabi

Onthego is great. I text myself the route to check while I am running. Also I made a little library of routes by saving to my home screen, but they’ve since changed something and I can no longer do that which is a shame as it was a handy reference. So i use my texts as the library now

Have fun peeps with whatever you’re doing. Hopefully if you’re injured it won’t be for long and you’ll soon be back out there πŸ‘πŸ˜ƒ

I’m concentrating on strength for the next two weeks πŸ‘πŸ”₯

I did manage to do my long run on Saturday before finding out my husband had Covid. My Nike running plan finishes this Sunday but I now won’t be able to complete it on time. I’ll do it as soon as I get let out πŸ™„

Well done on the PB, that’s great. I haven’t tried for a 5K or 10K PB for years! I’m always a bit scared of running flat out in case I get injured as I’m a bit prone to that πŸ™„ but maybe one day....

All is going well with the runs and exercise stuff apart from the heat. I’m having to get up really early to miss the sun and I’m not great in the mornings ☹️ But needs must.

The ankle issues have disappeared as suddenly as they appeared but I’m still keeping an eye on them. I do think it had something to do with wearing flip-flops which I only do in summer, because as soon as I changed to mules with a bit of support, the ankles settled down. Weird ...

Have a good week everyone and stay safe πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒπŸ™‚

roseabi profile image
roseabiUltramarathon in reply to Irishprincess

Thank you! I am actually a bit scared about falling over - I had a nasty one back in December when I was only plodding along, and I dread to think what it would be like at speed!!

That's great news about the ankle!! I have read that flip flops are really bad for feet, although not ankles so much. But I can imagine that it would be very easy to roll an ankle in such an unstable shoe?

xxx

Irishprincess profile image
IrishprincessAdministratorHalf Marathon in reply to roseabi

Yes, I remember your post about falling down πŸ™€ you had quite a few injuries if I remember.

I’ve read that flip flops are the worst things you can wear but I couldn't find my faithful Dr Scholls so I had to wear the β€˜zero support’ flip flops when the weather warmed up. But I’ve since found the mules which appear to have done the trick with the ankles. They seem to give my arches a bit of support which mimics my orthotics in the running shoes, so there’s a lesson there for me... πŸ™„
