Hey gang!

How are things with you? Tell us all about it!!!!

As always, if you're new here, or just browsing through the community posts, this is a great place to introduce yourself and let us know how you are doing. Youโ€™ll find plenty of support and knowledge from your fellow runners here.

As for me, I'm still trundling along with a Garmin Coach half marathon plan, which so far seems pretty fun, and I've been feeling good!

Aaaaaand, you may not have seen it yet, but for the Spring Half Marathon Group, Linda9389 announced here on Friday that we will be running a virtual group HUHM on Sunday 28th March at 9.30am, or thereabouts!

There will be a guided run available on RunGo for all participants, in which we hope to include input from our VRBs on here - motivational words, funny stories, mantras, bribes, etc. Whether or not you plan to partake, we would love to have your input on this - just please send your messages to Linda or me via private Chat, so as not to spoil the surprise!

Personally I will never forget Ju-Ju's mantra:

"Push that body, punish that body" ๐Ÿ˜Š

More info about the vHUHM here: healthunlocked.com/marathon...

Have a fabulous week, everyone!!!

Hi roseabi and lovely running friends, I hope youโ€™re all enjoying the milder weather!๐ŸŒž๐Ÿ˜ŽIโ€™m trundling along nicely towards John Oโ€™Groats and California on my virtual LEJOG and Route 66 challenges. Iโ€™m aiming to complete LEJOG4 with my HUHM effort at the end of March๐Ÿคž Iโ€™ve got to stick quite rigidly to my training plan to get there on time, but Iโ€™m sure Iโ€™ll manage it.

My long run this week is 15K on Wednesday and it should be fine weather so thatโ€™s looking good so far๐Ÿ‘

Happy running everyone! ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ

It's milder, but a bit nasty! I'm off out for a long run soon, urgh...

Happy running, David! xxx

At the other end of the spectrum from HM training; the snow has finally cleared, so I managed my first 5k after a 9 day runless gap! The icy wind has gone too; a balmy 8/9C, no jacket needed, perfect. I was slow, but my calf felt fine at the end of the run. Treated it to a it to a 5k beach walk this afternoon too! Still going to the physio tomorrow though ....this niggle has been on and off since the beginning of December; my monthly mileage is way down. HM seems a long way off, but I'll just keep trying. Runners never give up!

Thanks cheeky; I will certainly report back. Typically everything feels much better this morning, but the problem is it keeps coming back. 5k run and 8k walking overall yesterday definitely helped. ๐Ÿคž

Hey roseabi and all you helpful runners who have been giving me words of experiential wisdom along my journey. I started the C25K here last August and Iโ€™m training for my first HM (the Hackney HM) on May 16th, which will probably be a virtual HM. The HUHM is probably a little too soon for me as Iโ€™ve only just run 13K. Iโ€™m aiming to increase the distance by 1K every week but as suggested Iโ€™ll be having a rest week once every three weeks. It could be that by March 28th Iโ€™m ready to run my first HM (assuming not everybody who runs marathons and HM practises the entire distance before a race?). Anyway, no doubt Iโ€™ll receive lots of advice on whether that is possible/advisable. Love this forum!

roseabi profile image
roseabiUltramarathon in reply to Dodgylungs

Lots of people don't get as far as HM distance while training for their first - many like to save it for the race! I myself only got to about 15 km, and it was fine xxx

Dodgylungs profile image
DodgylungsHalf Marathon in reply to roseabi

How did you know you could do the remaining 6K? Doesnโ€™t that make for a stressful run?

roseabi profile image
roseabiUltramarathon in reply to Dodgylungs

Well, yes it can, and if that's a concern then it would make more sense to run the full distance in training. I prefer to do so myself, in fact I will run further. But for my first HM I had some knee trouble and had to wing it ๐Ÿ˜„

But if the full distance is not achieved in training we tend to trust that our training has been good, we feel the determination to succeed, and importantly we plan just to go the distance without any heroics - so we are not worried about a particular finishing time, and we will take walking breaks as needed.

Dodgylungs profile image
DodgylungsHalf Marathon in reply to roseabi

I always feel that a walking break is a failure for me. Maybe I need to change that mentality.

misswobble profile image
misswobbleMarathon in reply to Dodgylungs

Iโ€™d consider it for sure. A walk can save your arse. It makes sense and is not in any way a failure ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ‘

roseabi profile image
roseabiUltramarathon in reply to Dodgylungs

Not a failure, it's a great running method. Think about structuring your walk breaks, for example by picking a target that you must run to (say a particular building up ahead of you on your route) before you take a walk - be sure it's not too far, but don't make it too easy on yourself either! As you progress you can make it your goal to walk less xxx

I'm back on my 12 week Womens Running HM plan after a week of non running last week due to snow and ice. I started week 3 with a 7 mile run after work today. Good job I put my trail shoes on as I encountered lingering snow and slush. By then my feet were quite hot so it was good to cool them down!I don't think I'll be ready by the end of March to join the virtual run with the gang, but we shall see.

Hi lovely Roseabi and all the other lovely vrb buddies here. ๐Ÿ˜ŠI completely missed that last post from Linda. Itโ€™s super tempting for me as I wouldnโ€™t mind trying another HM and this time actually go out and plan to run it ๐ŸคฃIโ€™ve been on a 5k speed quest as you know Roseabi and, although it worked fabulously, I have been left with a niggle in my ankle which I think, according to google, is likely to be anterior tibial tendinitis. Good news is I put an orthotic insert in today and that really stopped all the pain. I reckon my high arches couldnโ€™t stand the strain of the fast running. So a HM at the moment is quite appealing. Wow. I never thought Iโ€™d say that!! ๐Ÿคฃ

Hey roseabi and pals! Training is going well thanks. I wonโ€™t bore people again with my decision to run two HMs in March (thereโ€™s a whole post on here for those who were lucky enough to miss it this weekend!) ๐Ÿคฃ

This is a bit of a cutback week ahead of my next long run of 10 miles. Iโ€™m wincing at the fact that the common is muddy again after being dry as a bone for a week, but it has 4 weeks to dry out. Iโ€™ll be doing fine weather dances like crazy! ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿคž๐ŸคžMy HUHM run will be the finale of LEJOG4 too. Iโ€™m down to 97 miles to go now and all of a sudden JOG seems close! ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ

How wonderful to run and feel too warm yesterday. That cold weather - the wind specifically - was tough wasnโ€™t it? ๐Ÿฅถ

Happy running everyone. ๐Ÿฅฐ

Hi all! Another three runs for me last week, despite the arctic temperatures. It was -17 when we headed out for our #notparkrun on Saturday. Like you, though, things have heated up, which means that snow has finally fallen. So maybe I can go skiing again soon.

I've decided not to commit to any specific events, but slowly work on long runs without stopping, which will probably take time! My target is 3 hours nonstop, then I'll probably do a virtual marathon. The last time I ran for that long without stopping was about 4 years ago. I haven't started yet, as all the layers I've been wearing as well as my studded shoes make running pretty slow going.

In other news, our whole family is in quarantine, as one of my daughter's teachers had a positive Covid test at the end of the week, and the UK variant has already been found at the school. Plus my daughter was home with a one-day sore throat earlier that week. Her test came back negative, but she'll take a new test tomorrow, and we'll all have a test as well. At least we're still allowed to go for walks and runs, so we're doing fine.

Doing a negative Covid test dance too!

Great goal! xxx

Hello roseabi and everyone,Iโ€™m two weeks into a Garmin Coach HM plan, the last one I did was for completion but this one is for a specific time so itโ€™s a more specific and varied plan and Iโ€™m enjoying it more. My knees have felt weak at times so Iโ€™ve started using my sonโ€™s exercise bike which he says is good for strengthening knees.

Iโ€™m coming up for my first runniversary later this week, a year since starting c25k. Iโ€™ve been going round the roads near home, when I was doing laps of the block so as not to get too far from home, and running into every cul-de-sac because they were the nearest things to flat land and I was so desperate to find a way to avoid having to run so much uphill. Nowadays I can run the uphill as fast as the downhill โ€“ faster when my knees are too dodgy to speed down a hill โ€“ and the โ€˜super hillyโ€™ routes I chose for my first post c25k consolidation run are a part of my standard route these days if I need something moderately level. Listening to my original running playlist too, it brings back the memories of my c25k in a way that makes it fun to compare and see how Iโ€™ve improved.

That's wonderful to read - a massive well done to you!!! xxx

What does Coach Greg have in store for you this week?

Magellan profile image

Today it was fast intervals, on Wednesday itโ€™s a progression run, I do two thirds at 7:50 mins/km and the last third at 6:20. I havenโ€™t done a progression run yet, Iโ€™m trying to plan a flattish route for it...

Hello! Off the IC after a couple of weeks' down time. Done lots of yoga and abs/glutes workouts so it's been a good time to remind myself of the benefit of "other" non-cardio exercise! Neatly coincided with hellish icy conditions out there so was quite glad I wasn't running.... I don't think I will make HM distance by 28th March now, after this break unfortunately. But aiming to ramp things back up to normal hopefully this week and next with a view to taking part in "Run Everyone" in March with my lovely parkrun ladies. It's a fun team challenge in lieu of the Cambridge Half so will motivate me to get some miles under my belt even if I can't make 13.1 at the end of the month...

I am still a plan-free zone ๐Ÿ™ƒ

However, thanks to a teaching-free day yesterday, lovely weather, and an urge to see the local castle (photo attached) I ended up doing 18.33k. PBs for 10 miles and 15k, because it was relatively flat (320m+) on a mix of forest and field tracks, and roads in the valley. And I stopped to take the photo!

Mine sounds wimpish by comparison โ˜บ๏ธ โ€œSmall steps, small stepsโ€, muttered repeatedly ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Iโ€™m just bumbling along with no plan. No speed work either as I canโ€™t be bothered. My vavavoom has upped and left. I donโ€™t care as Iโ€™m enjoying my running (well, apart from my recent tumble that is๐Ÿ™‚) Pootling about just seems so enjoyable ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ

I have a notion to try and run a half marathon per month. The idea nicked from someone hereabouts, canโ€™t quite remember who ๐Ÿค”. Just to run it in leisurely fashion. To keep my hand in as it were ๐Ÿ™‚. Ticking over should an event present itself.

Iโ€™m just off for a walk on the golf course to find the mythical lakes which have eluded me thus far ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ‘€. Safer to mooch about while there are no balls whizzing about.

Have a good week yโ€™all ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ‘

Well Iโ€™m still running 5Kโ€™s which is fine because thereโ€™s still a pesky lingering knee ache and I really want to have that gone before I push further. But hey, thereโ€™s no rush and at least I can run ๐Ÿ˜Š

I would love to do the HUHM but atm I canโ€™t see that happening as I wouldnโ€™t want to risk rushing it. But Iโ€™ll still be able to give my running friends here lots of support.

In other news I did a Stretch Flow class the other day and it was wonderful. Lots of deep stretches which did me the world of good. It was a โ€œtesterโ€ class from my Pilates teacher and I really hope she continues them.

Have a good week everyone and keep at it ๐Ÿ˜

The snow has finally melted! I'm so thankful, but was so amazed to not have to wear 5 layers on the latest run! I would have never believed I could say this but I was actually happy it began to rain (not snow)! I was planing to do my long run of 18k last Sunday, but the ice got really bad... so this weekend it is. 10 degrees will be much nicer than in -5 anyways :)

My two runs this week have been good - a 10k on Monday (still slushy so I was in a bad mood); and then a 6k yesterday with some speeding up at the end - gosh that was tough! But Strava tells me I ran my 1k pb so thats always a win ;)
