Marathon long run advice from Jake πŸ˜„

I just saw a video on Facebook by a bloke called Jake, and I think the advice is really good.

You should be able to view the video with or without a Facebook account: facebook.com/runningwithjak...

But here's the gist of it:

Running 18 miles using the 'Cross Road Countdown'

Run from and to your car, keeping your food and water there so you don't have to carry it.

Three different routes:

- 4 miles out, 4 miles back

- 3 miles out, 3 miles back

- 2 miles out, 2 miles back

Q. But I might be tempted to give up, get in my car and go home!?

A. Yes, but if you're serious about your training you probably won't do that!

Q. 18 miles - but how am I ever going to run 26.2 miles, when I couldn't run another step today?

A. Training has a cumulative effect. You didn't have to run another step TODAY, but on marathon day you will run those extra steps!

Q. My legs are really tired!?

A. You have run 18 miles - your legs SHOULD be tired! The training will build your strength.

You're welcome 😊

This is the sort of training Pippa49 was using. I must admit I couldn't follow that, I get a kick of of seeing my routes stretch further and further rather than just counting ground covered.

I also feel there's something to be said for carrying everything you need, being self-sufficient πŸ€”

I tend to agree, although I think it might be interesting to try this sometime! The lesson in fortitude is a good one. I am planning a route for one of my longest runs which will have me running past my flat at about 28 km and carrying on for another 5 😊😊😊

I did park my car around mile 20/22 a couple of times, in case I wanted to give in... but I'm too bloody minded πŸ€£πŸ‘πŸ»

Good Onya Jo, on both points.πŸ‘

I agree.

Your an absolutely warrior/ star at this and much admired for how and what you have achieved.⭐️

For this old snail and with one 3.5 hour non stop marathon ticked off and carrying a Heath Robinson racksack of stuff,πŸ™ˆπŸ€£( did not want to invest in the proper gear and never use it) not again and not for 7-8 hours.Just want to feel what it’s like and tick the boxβœ…for the magic forum.

I am going to just enjoy and get home safely.

Hope all going nicely for you Jo.

Still if I can get round come the long day it will at least give me some idea and even more, sit back and admire in wonder the achievements of others and the EK 2 hour job.πŸ€”πŸ™ˆπŸ€£πŸ€£πŸ’₯πŸ’₯❀️

Oh goodness Abi, I cannot tell you how much I needed to see this today. I had a rubbish attempt at 17 miles yesterday for my long run and it was horrible.

It came after a rough few days following an accident involving a family member, I ran a more hilly route than usual which was tough and walked more than I ever usually do. I was even a bit tearful at 14 miles wondering how the heck I was going to make the marathon distance and the rest of my training. I returned exhausted and fed up.

So this post and suggestion with the added reassurance/perspective could not be better-timed. I am grateful to you and Jake!

I carry about 250ml of water but for runs of 8 miles plus I go passed the house at around 5 miles and pop in for a wee and a couple of jelly babies!

Used to carry the sweets with me but always have to head home for the loo at some point. I don't seem to be able to manage more than an hour without doing...must be something to do with all the jiggling about while running!

Thanks for the vid πŸ‘
