Trying to up my distance

I've been running 10k once a week now sometimes twice a week. I do a bit of cycling on my other days to keep the fitness up. Ive decided to try and up the distance. My aim would be to try someday get to maybe (here's hoping) half marathon distance. So last week I ran 12k and today I went out and got to 14k in 1:20:33. Just going to try and maybe do an extra Kilometre each week. Would that a good way to go about it?

Hi! Welcome to the forum!!

That is a fine and sensible way to build up your distance to half marathon. I presume you mean you are doing one long run, and one or two shorter ones, each week? Once thing I would add - it is a good idea to cut your total weekly distance every three weeks or so, to allow yourself time to recover. Recovery is a very important consideration during any training plan, helping to mitigate the risk of injury and burnout.

Another thing, we are about to start a Spring Half Marathon group - we will be posting regularly with tips and discussions about all aspects of training, well worth a look 😊😊😊

Sounds good, though as distance grows once every week may become a bit onerous and the odd cut back is great for recovery and mixing things up. Do you have an event booked?

No event as yet booked possibly something March April time. How did you achieve that level?

How did I get to HM distance? I followed a version of roseabi s plan and joined her spring HM group this time last year. I ran every three days, mixing long/HM pace and tempo/interval runs. The long run steadily increased, but was slightly less often than every week.

There's lots of plan options and info listed in Abi's post to the HM group earlier this week.. Hope you find one to suit you 🙂

It’s good to have a plan if you’re aiming for half marathon, something that’s been worked out to give you a mix if long/short slow/fast interval runs. Mixing up the runs really does work and increases your stamina over distance. You’re doing really well. 14k is well in the way
