Crikey, I've had a week of work madness and logged on to find a million amazing posts! So I've got a busy time catching up ahead of me πŸ˜†

One thing I did manage to read on the go is this article about Hillary Allen, and it really stuck with me...my mind keeps wandering back to it. Partly because what an amazing and terrifying thing skyrunning sounds, but mostly because humans are really amazing, insane, focused things when it comes to our running goals and, more broadly, triumphing over adversity! I'm sure we've all had our own demons, physical and mental (maybe less dramatic than Hillary's, but still with plenty of troublesome demonic impact) but she takes the concept of bouncing back to a whole new level.

bbc.co.uk/sport/49935633

So hopefully no one has had a run quite like that lately, but I think there's plenty of inspiration there to take away into our own challenges..! Annnnnnd speaking of challenges, what are your plans for the next few days? 🀣

If you're new or a lurker this is a great place to say a little hi without the pressure of a full post.

Do you have any events this weekend that you'd like to be added to the pompom post? If so, let us know below! πŸ‘‡ πŸ‘‡ πŸ‘‡

Happy running!

Wow that was some read! I am always so impressed by people who go back to something that broke them like that, I am not brave.

I am inspired by this, and a lot of things I read about and saw over the weekend 😊😊😊 A blogger I follow got a personal best marathon last week, averaging 4 min/km. I went for a run with a magnificent tailwind and the fastest pace I could muster was 4:20, and that only for a few seconds. And then there was Eliud and Brigid, and all the folk on here posting their fabulous race reports from the weekend.

So I am planning an assault on a sub-4 hour Brighton Marathon! I have my plan ready to go, starting next month. And now I'm thinking, well, I'll have to run a whole marathon at my current half marathon pace! Yay, and my half marathon will be at 10k pace; my 10k will be at 5k pace, and my 5k will be something beyond sane imagination 😱

There is no try 🀣

Do you mind if I ask what your current marathon PB is Abi? I think by most online calculators I too should, on paper, be able to run sub-4. (Insert β€˜you don’t run a marathon on paper’ joke here). I’m 45-50 mins for 10km, 1’45-1’50 for HM. But I think if I were to run a marathon now I’d definitely be 4h15m at best (3h40m for 36km today). Training needed I suppose, to improve my stamina.

Good luck with your training plan for sub-4. I’m still trying to decide where to run next Spring. I’ve just registered interest for Brighton - I nearly booked months ago but procrastinated.

First time out I think I’d be better just running without a time in mind. But that’s... hard to do, isn’t it?

Everyone on here who raced this weekend certainly were inspiring to me. Just brilliant. Gawd bless C25K and all who have sailed on her to further shores!😊

roseabi profile image
roseabiUltramarathonβ€’ in reply toColinsmith

Ha, with your figures you're much more likely to run a sub-4 than I am!

My marathon PB is just under 4:17, but I like to aim high - why not? 😊😊😊

NB, you can't really use a training long run as a race time predictor.

Colinsmith profile image
ColinsmithHalf Marathonβ€’ in reply toroseabi

I have no doubt you’ll do it! πŸ™‚ I suppose for me, it would come down to more training. I’m nowhere near focused enough, and haven’t got the miles in the legs yet for longer distances.

Decker profile image
DeckerUltramarathonβ€’ in reply toroseabi

Sub 4 seems like magical territory for me, but I think you could totally do it.

Lordi profile image
LordiMarathonβ€’ in reply toroseabi

Sub-4? Wow, you can do it if anyone can Abi! A 5:40 pace seems a bit daunting to maintain over the full 42.2k but you're in touching distance with your current FM PB already. Great target for 2020.

Ask me to read that and then tell you my challenge for the week? ... errr ... πŸ€ͺ i read it and particularly noted that, pretty much thrown in as an aside, 'she just broke her ankle in training' then won a major skyrunning event 4 months later! Yet here am I lingering back on the IC from a break 5 months ago. Is she superwoman (yes) or am I a wimp (probably). Anyway, I had a very painful sports massage today and am told there doesn't appear to be a problem - just tightness and resultant straining, and that I should have a go at running through it. So that's my 'challenge' for this week - lots of stretching and a little bit of running. Fingers crossed again 🀞

Crikey, that's one hell of an ultra running story! Amazing.

Ran a HM over the weekend and got a much treasured new PB to finish off the season. Got my distance mojo back too to boot, so looking forward to next season already and another crack at the marathon! Plan to sign-up for events well in advance in 2020 as a motivator to sketch-out a season and have a plan of sorts. I'm sort of planning to 'run-through' to next season without any off-season or break - to see how starting 2020 from a higher base level of fitness works out. Might have a crack at my 5k PB in a Parkrun soon too, but my biggie will be next year and an attempt to knock a 30 min chunk off my marathon time (gulp/damn - I've said it I''ll have to do it!) ☺

Wow just read the article! She is amazing! !! 😊x

I have GSR this weekend but sadly I still feel broken. I have been on a roll this year with my first marathon, a new half pb but on trail, a first proper trail 10k and some other small road races along the way. But now my groin strain is still aggravated since 24th sept. I have dropped my running considerably and it is slightly improved but still sore at times with stairs being an on/off issue. I just dont know what to do besides seeing the physio again. Not sure if I will run GSR or cheer on our club runners.

roseabi profile image
roseabiUltramarathonβ€’ in reply to

How are you feeling today? xx

β€’ in reply toroseabi

Well my hip is much better today, I haven't run since my 10k on sunday though. Physio feels this is a hip joint problem which may be a temporary aggravation but wants xrays to check for stress fracture or degenerative change in the bone. This may take a few weeks to get done. In the meantime I can run taking it easy. So GSR is still on currently.

Sandraj39 profile image
Sandraj39Half Marathonβ€’ in reply to

Glad you are hoping to run - good luck tomorrow! πŸ™‚ Don't think I shall run tomorrow....my back is on the mend (tho' still not great) and I'm still really congested. The cold alone would be ok but not sure it's worth risking my back. My heart ❀️wants to run but my head says 'no'. πŸ˜•With a HM in November and a job I love that I need to be fit for - think I shall give this one a miss.

β€’ in reply toSandraj39

Probably a wise choice to give it a miss. My si joint is achey but I am sure it is all hip joint related, achey is better than pain! Gsr is my last long run on the calendar for this year so it would be a shame to miss it!

Post trail race and a half marathon I have a painful ankle 🀨. I walked on it yesterday on my way back from town and it felt good. It’s stiff again this morning so i’m Going to do some home yoga rather than running today as planned.

I did a training 21.5 k on Sunday. My Nike marathon plan refreshed overnight, and on Monday morning coughed up a run of 23.5k 😳😳😳😳. Not likely 😁. I think it must have gone bandy. There’s no way I would have done it. I rested instead. I have a half marathon race this weekend so need to get my niggly ankle better by then.

My psoriasis is really bad. I can’t believe from never having it in my 60 odd years to find myself covered in it ☹️ I’m trying not to let it be at the forefront of things. My husband has ordered us a new bed as I’ve never liked our Tempur one as it makes me far too hot πŸ₯΅. Keeping cool is now becoming an obsession 😁. He won a sweepstake at work and he’s spending it on the bed. A Hypnos ! πŸ˜ƒ. I take it all back πŸ˜πŸ˜‡

Marathon training ongoing, apart from a bit of a rest due to niggly ankle this week. HM on Sunday and then press on with marathon training ready for my November marathon at the seaside.

Decided not to do a local short fell race the week before, lest I get crocked. Pity though as it’s such a good un 🀨.

There’s a fairly local fell race the week after my marathon, which I fancy, but it’s full-on fell race rules. I don’t have compass, map or fully waterproof jacket. Yet! So dithering on that one 🀨

Have a great week folks and take care out there y’hear πŸ˜ƒπŸ‘πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™‚οΈπŸ…β˜”οΈ

Just reading this now - that is an amazing read

Last week I managed 3 run - varying life blips stopped me doing any more than that

I consolidated my 16K with a very hard 16.3k on Sunday

Ran in my new trail hybrid shoes on Saturday in an attempt to get them a bit dirty and a bit less bright :D I like them, they aren't too different a fit from my normal shoes that I really noticed the difference but they did make a difference in grip, so all good there.

I am now "in training" for my 13K trail in December and, just to keep me going over the Christmas period, I signed up for a 17k one in January which should keep me well on track for my HM on 1 March - I find the trails harder and they seem to be making me stronger. My "plan" is to up my trail milage slowly until my long run is on trails and my shorter one is on road. The HM is a mixture of both.

I still find the beginning of each run REALLY hard, I mean like, "I want to stop now" hard. I do push through (and convince myself that this is making me mentally stronger) but I would like to find something to improve my first 5K experiece, because it really is 30 mins or more until everything settles down and I find my legs moving more easily. It is strange that in the Spring my breathing was an issue (allergies) but now I have no real problems with breathing as long as I take it at a reasonable steady pace, but my legs are now the problem. I am doing leg exercises to make them stronger but it seems to be making them feel heavier. I am also having almost to force water down to stay hydrated, my body doesn't seem to be "asking " for it.

Ah well, it'll all come out in the wash :)
