I've got an excited prickly feeling because the seasons are changing quite quickly up here. This is one of the only photos I took after my ill-fated half last week, just look at the colour on that leaf! I love the cooler weather for running (and just in general, I like woollens and hats and all the trappings of winter wardrobes, and breathing in the crisp air, I'm sure I can fit more oxygen into my lungs when it's cold). I'm definitely an autumn/winter runner, though it stretches into spring too as it can still be pretty chilly and fresh up here! I'm excited to get my head torch out, and my layers, and my merino buffs, and my ice grips π I've got plans to take a hot drink out with me this year, just for fun, so I can have a sit down on top of a freezing hill and survey my kingdom.
How do you feel about the changing seasons? Do you have a preferred time of year for running?
π― A little low-key fanfare this week too, because the lovely Decker is joining us as a moderator! He needs absolutely no introduction of course, but will be handing out the badges this week (and I think there will be plenty, so Abi and I dodged a bullet there π) Thanks for coming on board Decker!
Sometimes we don't feel like putting a whole post up but just want to share something small, so this is a great place for doing that during the week. Please join in the discussion!
If you're new or a lurker this is a great place to say a little hi without the pressure of a full post.
Happy running!

What a pretty leaf! I like certain things about running in all the seasons, but I'm most certainly looking forward to some cooler weather!!!
Thank you for joining us, Decker π
I have had a completely rubbish week, in fact for over a week I have been benched with a supremely ghastly cold π± I managed to drag myself to Thorpe Park last Monday (we'd already booked it) and go on most of the rides - but I felt extremely dizzy afterwards! Other than that I've mostly just been gazing blearily at my phone web browser, poor me... π
Anyway, all seems better this week, and I have just got back from a perfectly acceptable 5K run, so onwards and upwards - hurrah! The weather's a bit more possible too πππ
Lovely picture. Welcome, Decker! Season-wise, itβs nice to run in cooler weather but at Saturdayβs Parkrun they warned us of βdebrisβ on the path. Sure enough, there was a slippy-slidey mulch of wet leaves and sticks. Not an ideal surface for running quickly. But glad that thereβs no more heatwave this year.
BBBBAAAAACCCCKKKK! All the way back to the beginning of C25K as it happens, but that's OK! I'm having fun (huge fun) doing the program without the ever-present fear of my first attempt, how stupid was that. I don't care what season it is ir what the weather does, I'm just happy to be back out there. My goal is parkrun on 2nd Nov, and maybe Osterley 10k on 7th Dec. I know it might all go wrong, but I do like a goal π€ͺ. Looking back through strava I found my post from 19th May after my HM - 'Happy, happy ...who cares about sore foot'. Well, if only I'd realised what the next four months held in store! Sometimes it good not to know what's around the next corner π. Happy running to those who can, speedy healing to those who can't just now because of injury and huge thanks for all the support I've received xxx
Thanks Sqkr. I will try my best not to break the badge system this week:).
The weather here is jumpy. Today, cool and tomorrow scorching shorts weather. I also love fall running and am really looking forward especially to the maples turning colour. Bright reds and oranges.
On the running front, the planβs last long run is done now and itβs into the taper zone for me. Though next Saturdayβs 24k still feels like a longer run.
I'm with you on the running seasons front. Summer does not suit me for running one little bit, and now the cooler temperatures are here I am finding my pace and distances building up again
I don't know about the leaves changing colours but I have been running in some awful wet weather this last week. Had a bit of a twinge the week before, so missed a couple of runs.
The hour and a half running in (often torrential) rain yesterday did make me question my life choices, whilst feeling whistful of those few missed runs.
Only kidding onwards and flatwards for me. Good to see Decker has been enlisted into the team. A very good choice ladies. Although, does that mean he will tell us off now!
Last week went to plan with a gentle 4K, a 10k where I ran with my back to the 22mph wind until I ran out of land at 4k and then had to run into it. Then a parkrun with winds gusting to 37mph which allowed me to PB my 1 and 2 mile times on the outward journey but had me struggling on the way back. It is all good training for the Great South Run as it is quite possible that we will have to face that wind on the homeward leg.
Not sure what I can achieve this week due to a funeral up north but may have to do a long one instead of parkrun at the end of the week.
Like you I love this time of year for running and just for getting outside. Half way through my last run this morning before my first 10k race on Sunday in Southend. Feeling excited and scared in equal measure. But Iβve run 13k during the summer heat so I should be fine. Even if I am at the back. Snails rule. ππ»ββοΈππ
Hey Decker! Hopefully you will be the one to award me my Marathon badge! October is here.... yay. And with it so is my first marathon on Sunday! Nerves and excitement are bubbling. No running because of tapering so loads of cleaning instead to get rid of the nervous energy! And lists lol. Lots of lists. And 3 outfits as so far Bournemouth will either be very wet, wet and warm or just warm lol! But it is here. The week I run my Marathon. ππββοΈ xx
I'm feeling a bit stressed and anxious. We're supposed to go on holiday on the 12th but can't book anything because someone didn't get his passport renewed in good time... so I'm praying it comes quickly πππ
Good for you Decker , keeps you busy when off the feet ππ»π
Not sure how this month's goals will go but I do know the month will be gone before we know it!π€£
What a gorgeous leaf! I usually love fall running, but we got hit with over 20 cm of snow this weekend and heavy wind so at times it was coming down sideways so only a very short treadmill run this weekend. I ran 10k on Friday before the snow started on the city paths and my legs were surprisingly tight afterwards. I'm not sure if it is the road shoes I have or my legs not used to running on asphalt. I'm working on ankle and hip/glute strengthening exercises and just trying to run whatever distance meets my fancy for now. No pressure and keeping the fun.
It's possible that the cold was playing a role but I think I was heel striking a bit more than usual. I haven't ran on asphalt in a while and kind of forgot about form. These road shoes I bought last spring are also a stability shoe. I didn't realize it until after I got them home so it might be altering my gait a bit too. I should probably just use them for work and get a new pair of neutral shoes but the frugal part of me is holding off for now and see how some shorter runs feel.
I don't mind the cold and/or wet weather provided the ground is ice free. After spending time increasing distance and pace (so lots of time in the red zone)I want to devote October to hills and expanding the number of routes I can take from home without having to get the car out. I think a mixture of one Park Run, one green zone long run with map at the ready( on different routes) and one hill buster(of varying length dependent on steepness and energy expended) seems like a plan. Always tempting to revert to the familiar of course so a bit of determination will be required. Happy running π
