Here we are at the official start of the OHMG! October Half Marathon Group πππ
What an amazing photo of the start of the Royal Parks Half!? I'm very envious of all of you who are running it, and I may well put my name in the hat for next year's π
I want to wish you loads of luck and fun with your training over the next few months, and whether or not you're actually starting training this week, remember to keep a little strength training in your routine!
Here is the circuit I shared with the Spring group for a little yummy taster...
Hi Roseabi, I started my HM training with a 6K in sunny BognorπππββοΈ It was supposed to be 5K but I miscalculated the distanceπ³ I did manage negative splits for the first time ever though so I was pleased with that!ππ
Well, Iβm starting from further back than I thought... I have a slight groin strain and dropped from 18 miles the week before last to 4K total last week π±
Itβs feeling better day by day but I think this will be another light week. Hoping to get back to parkrun a week on Saturday and will have to plan from that point as my average weekly mileage (over the previous four weeks) will have nearly halved.
Nobody said this was going to be easy, and Iβm already thinking that mine being early November is a good thing as I have an extra month to get back to my usual running.
Have a great first week on the official journey to HM everybody.
Good luck to you too UFN! Itβs never good to be injured when you want to be out thereπ The only slightly good thing is itβs happened early in the training so you have a reasonable amount of time to recoverπππ€
Yeah... Iβd rather it now than in mid September! I did 70km walking last week, so Garmin still had me way above the 150 minutes of activity, just 0 strenuous stuff, even kept the heart rate down on my short runs... maybe thatβs gonna be handy going forwards.
It seems to be going well. Physio says light and short running only. Walking is ok as long as not up mountains so Iβve been walking 5k every morning and evening. Itβs feeling a lot better today than it did this time last week... but Iβm resisting the urge for a 10k run. The wife on the other hand would love me to be out running it as sheβs off today and Iβm grumpy π€£
Physio today prodded and pulled and twisted and squeezed my foot. He discovered there is now a very definite area of pain to touch - 2nd metatarsal. Likely stress fracture based on today's assessment. He has requested an MRI (if I haven't been called in two weeks I should contact them .... didn't dare ask how long the wait is for the scan, probably about as long as the amount of time wasted since I first went to the GP). Oh, and I shouldn't even be walking on it (cycling OK though)! No work, no dog walking. No way! So we compromised and I've ordered an aircast boot while I await the MRI. This doesn't feel like a quick fix. Even if not a stress fracture, it's likely to be a month before that's confirmed and there will be a lot to rebuild by then. I am so miserable right now. So all you people starting this week, get out there and make sure you enjoy your training on my behalf. I will be watching you all closely - there's not much else I can do! And don't anyone be smart and mention strength training right now π€¬
Oh no. Hereβs hoping that you get that MRI soon... at least the physio has found it, recovery begins now. Hope itβs not as serious as a stress fracture π€
Ugh. 6 weeks? I looked up the cost privately but it's out of reach! At least once I have the boot I will feel the healing is happening. Plus now we're fairly sure where the problem is I know which part of my foot to protect. I'll get used to it and perk up, but for today I feel sh**e. So much wasted time when my gut told me this was the problem right from the start. Hey ho. Tomorrow can only be better! Thanks for the concern, it's appreciated π
I only told you the possible wait to prepare you. I nearly went insane waiting! I looked at private..I have a plan..but the first one was a ridiculous price.!
It will sort.. we just have to bite back and wait...we will get there!!!! Xx
Oh Linda. π I am so sorry to hear this, how very frustrating. I know itβs no consolation, but try to cling on to the fact that this is temporary, you will heal and you will run again. (This is something I always lose sight of when injured.) I wish you a speedy recovery. π€π€π€ xxx
Thank you. You're right. I'm trying lots of positive self talk but I still have a face like a wet weekend π’and heaven help anyone who does or says anything wrong this evening π€¬π€¬
Oh gawd, what rotten luck. You must be well fed up π€
Courage though duck. Once you start treatment and physio youβll feel much more positive, I guarantee it πͺπ. You will be dead focussed on getting well. Youβll surprise yourself at your single-mindedness. Oh yesss πͺπͺπͺπͺ
I've been π at half marathons in October and I like the look of the Maverick Inov-8 original series in Oxfordshire! maverick-race.com/races/the... If anyone has any experience of these events, be nice to know how it went! Dog friendly as well cheekychipmunks ! πΆπ
I'm very focused on my 10k training at the moment, did 8.5km today... although I walked up one of the hills π. All good though, very happy with how everything is going.
I'm starting my plan with a 10k race on Sunday. I needed something to give me a kick up the bum over the last few weeks so I am ready to start and that seems to have been the motivation I needed. Gonna be a lot slower than the 10k I did back in January where I amazed myself with my time, but I should be able to run (/jog) all the way to the end and that's my normal aim.
It's also been a good reminder that if I regularly do the NHS's knee exercises for runners, my knees can cope with a lot more running than if I don't!! Going to keep that up and yoga on my non-running days in the hope that I can stop my body falling apart too much
I absolutely cannot believe Iβm saying this roseabi, but Iβm in! π±π±π π πββοΈπββοΈ What on earth have I become? πππ Canβt wait to get going! πββοΈπββοΈπββοΈπββοΈπββοΈ
Oh I think I must be the only person here doing a mid-Sept HM! (Now I feel a bit left out!) Have started training, using a tweaked version of your plan. So far, so okay! If mine is before everyone elseβs I can be magnanimous and show you how a HM is NOT done! πππ
Oh! I thought I had told the world! Itβs a wee obscure local HM - Beckenham Sept 15th. I only entered it because the start line is 15 min walk from my house, and thought it would be rude not to. π And thank you - think I am doing everything right, including strength training, but am totally paranoid about injuring myself during training, I am awfully twinge prone! xxx
Done my first run! Yay!!! Just a steady little 5k to get started.
Actually feeling pretty excited about this as itβs more than just the usual 3 runs/week, itβs a whole new challenge! I may not have a HM planned but if in 16 weeks time Iβve achieved my goal then I know Iβm in control if the miracle happens and I get that London Marathon place, and if I donβt, well I havenβt lost anything have I? Iβll still be able to run 13.1 miles π
For starters, from now on Iβm now making sure I keep a better eye on my pace so I make sure I donβt go out too fast.
Please add me to the group roseabi . I need to find my distance mojo again! Will sign-up for a late summer early autumn HM with the plan to target a sub 2 hour time. In the meantime I'll be extending my 10k+ runs at the required 5:40 sub-2hr pace incrementally. I'll use the easy DIY plan I used last season of: 3 runs per week - a 5k recovery jog a 10k tempo+ run, then a long run at 10k +x% at a min 5:40 pace extending it up to HM distance.
Hello everybody! Did a Strength Session last night, running this evening. Iβm in week 3 of a plan thatβs been drawn up specifically for the Cardiff HM. So it includes the 10k race series thatβs being held in South Wales as part of the programme and suits me perfectly because Iβve entered them all πππ
At the moment, Iβd like to be able to run the distance comfortably by October. Iβm looking at the London Landmarks half marathon for next year and Iβm in the ballot for the London Marathon next year.
I'm not sure what you mean! The spreadsheet is only a list of the people in the group...
Ah, I gotcha! No, this is not like the speed challenge, this is just a group to share the experience of training for a half marathon - give each other support and suchlike πππ
Right I'm back post brief IC. Went for a 3km today to test my new trail shoes and socks. All seemed ok. I Like the look of the runnersworld plan and it so happens that the first run is on a Tuesday and a 2 miles so one ticked off!
Well, Iβm starting this with a week off. No injuries thankfully, itβs just that I read somewhere that taking a week off occasionally is a good idea and I figured I could do with the break. Besides, it might have stopped raining by the end of my week.
I still havenβt done anything more than sporadic strength training. Maybe this week is a good time to start. The NHS Knee exercises for runners (nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/k... that was mentioned by R4inbow looks like a good idea. All I need now is to try and remember where I put my motivation...
I have had training plans before that start with: Day 1 - Rest. I like that πππ Well done for taking a break, and I'll do a no-rain dance π
I find that hard to believe. Besides, it's stopped raining. Would you arrange nice weather here in Bristol on Friday please? I've got an historic building tour planned for then.
If I were you I wouldn't do the squats right in front of a wall like the bloke in the pictures - you need to stick your butt out when you do squats πππ
