I am proposing to start a new Half Marathon group on Monday, June 17th. This will give enough time for a 16 week plan to finish on October 6th.
Anyone can join in - you can aim for a different date in or around October, and you don't have to do a 16 week plan.
I will not be training for a half marathon myself this time, but I will be chipping in with ideas and support.
Over the next couple of weeks I hope to be providing information about HM training plans that are generally available online or in apps - and please feel free to share any you know about!
The plan I drew up myself is available at the link below. It is a 16-week plan aimed at beginners, with the assumption that users have already got to 10K. I recommend that people have run 10K before embarking on a half marathon plan.
My first half marathon too. I have been parkrunning for about 6 weeks and now looking to expand to 10k then onto Royal Parks half marathon hopefully. Good luck
Yes please i am definitely interested. I'm doing my first half marathon on 30th June been doing some extra runs on top of the 10k Magic Plan which together with the Magical Mystical Shorts makes a lot of magic. But it would be good to do something structured i do need that discipline. So count me in.
Am interested I have a 12 week plan which I intend to start in July so it will take me to the end of September ready for the Manchester half marathon on October 13 do you think that will do me
Iβm in! My HM is going to be November 3rd, and Iβm currently consolidating 10k. I was thinking mid June would be the point where I set off on a plan.
I use Nike+ Run club which has an adaptive plans, in theory I could refuse to allow it to adapt once set up.
Itβll be great to be training at the same time as a group as I know nothing about running for more than track distances.
My HM has a 3 hour cutoff so my mission this time round is 2:59:59, anything below that and Iβll consider doing a victory lap π€£. Iβm currently running 10k in 1:07 so Iβm fairly confident I can do 11 more in under 1:53!
Ooohhhh! Youβve got us thinking now, 10 miler or HM.....I keep talking myself out of the HM.....but, then if youβre going to do it......π€πββοΈπββοΈπ€·ββοΈ....
Yes please! Iβm running the Royal Parks half in October so the timing is just right. Iβve got my first HM in just over a week and I have been improvising a plan, gradually increasing the distance each week.
Hi Roseabi, count me in please! I'm signed up for the Forest of Dean HM on 29th September which looks like a good fit for this. I've also got a 10K two weeks before that. I'm not sure how the two will go together but I figure there's enough time between the two. I guess it makes sense to concentrate on my HM and maybe do some prep for the 10K in the couple of weeks before it?
Welcome! You'd be best off concentrating on the HM as your goal race, with the 10K as part of the training. The work you will be doing on the half will be plenty to prepare you for the 10K, and the 10K will be a nice little tune-up for the half πππ
I'm def in roseabi, great eastern HM is Oct 13th, so perfect! Gotta get past a pulled hamstring first tho after a silly sprint finish against my teenage son!! π€¦ββοΈ
Welcome! For the hamstring, obviously if it's too painful don't run on it, cross-train to keep fit. If you can run, try shortening your stride, and avoid speed-work and hills until it feels better. Single-legged Romanian deadlifts (RDLs) are great for strengthening that area of the body - can be done without weights, although better with πππ
Hello everyone from a lurker, I have returned to running (slowly) after a couple of years of cancer treatment. Now up to a 15k run once a week and 2 or 3 shorter runs per week. This would be a great way to develop and move on to my next goal in a terrific team. So, please can I join in?
Welcome to the forum, and the Half Marathon Group! It's good to finally get a fictional Russian Countess on board π
Sounds like you're well ahead of the game, well done!!! And I'm glad to see you're doing so well in the face of cancer treatment, I reckon we could all learn something from you!!! xxx
Do you have a race in mind? Doesn't matter if not, some people may wish just to run the half marathon distance without aiming for a specific event. I'll be making a list of posse members, and it would be nice to include as much information as possible πππ
My user name definitely has ideas above her station! Thank you for the warm welcome. I am thrilled to be running again and to be here. No race in mind but I have (gulp) applied to run London 2020 marathon for either the Marsden where I am treated or for a cancer charity who have supported me loads. Of course no guarantee I will get a place but I am plodding on as if I have at the moment which makes a HM seem like a good goal. Looking forward to hearing everyoneβs plans and to the camaraderie of the group.
I wonβt this time, thanks, as Iβve got Swansea HM in 3 weeks.....then Iβm not sure after that, might just go for a lie down...... π...sorry for any confusion......
I'd like to do Maidstone HM in October but not sure if I am allowed to commit to the preparation by the other members of the household. Mr L-L is also convinced I will die. It's an undulating course with about 1000ft of elevation gain. I might lurk on the sidelines of any plan you publish.
It does look good, doesn't it? Last year I did the 5k race, a mere two days after finishing C25K, and promised myself I'd do my best to do the HM this year!
Hi. I'm very very tempted. But at the moment I'm slowly building upto 10 miles, (kinda doing my own think, but following 10% rule close enough) not there yet. then think I probably need to consolidate this for a while before jumping into next plan.
I hope that by following the posts you will get lots of useful ideas! And do chip in with comments, it's lovely to get as much feedback as possible πππ
Hello! Sorry, Iβm a bit late to the party (again). Can I join? Nothing booked (yet!) just feel the need to get some structure back into my life and if I get a ballot place for London it will feed in nicely to full marathon training. I was hoping to do a HM by the end of June but the warmer weather is really affecting my stamina on the longer runs. Lots of familiar names in the group too so the company will be excellent π
This looks very interesting and very tempting but not sure if I can commit to the training at the moment. I got into a great routine while I was training for a recent 10k event but fitting in 3 runs a week can be difficult. It will be interesting to see how folk get on
Yes Iβm up for it. Im looking at the Birmingham half marathon in October, Iβm up to 12k road running at moment, adding 1km every 4th run, not too scientific but thatβs how it grew after my c25k.
Ooh yes please. HM not booked yet as Iβm a bit nervous, but I have split the difference doing the GSR in October and thatβs 10 miles. Being ok to 13 would give me such a confidence boost. Currently managing a 6mile trail runs, a 5k trail Parkrun and a 5 mile road run each week. But not fast!π
