This might sound like a silly question, but what constitutes an Ultra? Does it have to be an official event? Does it have to be a double (42.2 km + 21.1 km) i.e. > 63.3 km or would a 45km-50km training jog count?
50km or above. Although the technical definition of an ultramarathon is anything further than a marathon, we think this causes some dodgy grey areas - and generally the official events start at 50km. That said, in line with our other badges, it doesn't have to be an official event for you to get the badge.
It doesn't have to involve any matching up of half and full marathon distances.
Thanks Floss - Iβd been gradually sneaking up my long run at 1k a week for awhile, and cycling back down to 10k for the long run about every 4th week. So Roseabiβs plan, but tweaked, with a head start and fairly laid back. (Iβm just walking as cross training every day I donβt run, and doing exercises at home that my Sports Therapist gave me for running and for my back / core.) And when my neck and spine flare-up, or something else tweaks, Iβm cautiously dropping to 2 runs a week instead of 3.
So donβt panic about not getting everything you feel you need to done in time for your March HM, because I absolutely believe youβve still got time - especially if you just want to finish rather than do a fast race time.
As Iβve got 4 months before my race, Iβve now got time to play around more with hills and speed intervals etc. I dropped to a 10k long run in the ice (wearing studs!) this week, but hope to run HM distance again on Monday. I see HM as a βsafeβ distance to repeat that shouldnβt cause too much damage, I hope...
