Hmm. Well, I just signed up for the London Landmarks Half Marathon. Which is currently well beyond my ability
Today I ran my first ever public event (5K race for life) and I think the sun must've gone to my head. Anyway, it is done ... so now I will lurk quietly here and see what I can learn, get to know people from the sidelines and try to work on not feeling a total fraud!
The only evidence I have to suggest that I MAY be able to do a half marathon next March is that 14 months ago I couldn't run a minute without wanting to die, and under no circumstances would I have thought I could run a 5K race !!!
Fingers crossed

Linda - I have run 3xhalf marathons over the last few years and I am a very slow non-runner Last one was my best in 2 hours 23 minutes - but will never do that again. I decided early on that I would run 5K's "non-stop" - but anything over that I would run/walk. To that end I have found the Jeff galloways run/walk programmes at the RunDisney website rundisney.com/training/#pri... to be good for first timers. Last time I introduced some faster training to the usual slow run type marathon training to improve my time.
Thank you for taking the time to reply. I'll take a look at the link. Slow is going to be my watchword here I am sure, however long it takes I know it will be a PB so long as I can make the distance
Just looked at your link and very much like the look of that one. Simple and spread out. Have looked at so many plans today, but that one has definitely grabbed my attention. Thank you
Linda, I was in your position last year. I signed up for my first half marathon in March, started training at the beginning of December. It was long enough. You will be fine.
The distances seem massive, but you build up a bit each week and before you know it you will be over that finish lin next March wondering how you got there. Good luck to you!
5kโs are all a bit of a rush. Bish, bash, bosh. Longer distances are far better as you have plenty of time to fit everything in so are much more satisfying I reckon. time to get warmed up and into it, time to check out the scenery and enjoy yourself, time to eat and drink - socialise even ๐. You can adjust your pace if you feel like youโre doing well or slow down if not
As long as you do the training there wonโt be any surprises come race day. Iโd get a training plan ! You donโt want to run more than you need to ๐
Ooh. You make it sound lovely! I thought I would carry on with ju-ju's 10K plan then consolidate for a little while. Then look for a plan that I think will work for me - there are lots out there it seems, just like for 10K I guess, and start that in Oct or Nov. Hopefully that will give me time to increase distance and in cooler weather!
That's good to know, thanks. I would like to consolidate my 10K for a little while and wait til the cooler weather before increasing distance, bit by bit. Sounds like there should be time to fit that in
Hello!!! A great big warm and cuddlesome welcome to the forum!!!!!!
Well done for doing the Race for Life, wonderful stuff! As misswobble said, 5Ks are tough!! You'll have loads of fun training for your half - and what a fabulous one to choose as your first!
Lurk away, I hope you find plenty of inspiration here
Thank you. It's why I decided to make the post - a bit of a wobble in confidence last night and from experience over on the 5K and 10K forums I suspected I might find a bit of kindly support over here. However scary the next step looks, it seems there are lovely people just waiting to help you on your way. Much appreciated
Ach there's no may about it, you'll totally be able to do a half! The hard part of all of this is the first few weeks of runningโthereafter you know you have the ability to tackle those running targets and smash them, you're well past that stage so now it's just a case of improving using whatever pace and training style suits you. You've got loads of time, so there's no pressure. Just enjoy where running takes you ๐
Ooh. Maybe that can be my mantra - can they be that long?. If I can learn it all the K's should just fly by as I repeat all that to myself. It's just what I need to hear though, thank you
