It's the last week of the challenge!!! How are we all getting on?
So far we've had some stonking Week 3 runs, C3PO , Tbae , and Macmac are high-flyers, but everyone who's posted so far has made an impressive gain, and don't forget we are all at different stages in running and are all different people of course!
That brings me to a quandary I have been in this weekend, with BLEWI posting about her lovely seafront run, and marco83 of his storming half marathon. I felt at the time that these runs should not count, as they are different to those used to provide the "baseline" pace for the challenge. However upon reflection (and because it made me feel a bit mean!) I've decided that, well, every run is different isn't it? We need to celebrate our runners and their efforts to improve, so gosh darn it here we are!
Considering this week is about shorter runs and healing up that foot of mine, I'll probably give it a couple of tries. Good luck to everybody, and thanks for the great motivation to speed this snail up.
I failed to do the run last week, and I have just been doing my sums. I am so desperate to get the Strava June elevation badge ( 2,500 metres this month) that I am going to be doing more hilly miles this week than speed. Next week I will be back on it even though it will be over! We need to think about the July challenge? yikes...
In my defence I am so loving being back out there without any ankle injuries that nailing this badge is a huge hurdle for me.... Now I have said it here I will have to get it. 6 miles tomorrow, I never do the woods in the week but needs must!
So last week was a bit disappointing or feels that way. Time stayed basically the same with a loss of 1 second... 31:05 from last week's 31:04... I must admit to doing hill training on trail the day before so quads were feeling that hill before the turn around on the 5km time trial route.
Hopefully this week Wednesday will be better but still feeling tender from the weekends efforts...
I cheated and did my reverse route this morning - starting with up, then legging it back down. Got a sub-5 minute km for the first time ever on the way back down!!! not such a spectacular improvement as last week, and (as I freely admit), it was the easier way round to do the route, but this time 28 minutes 41 seconds.
Next week I'll do the hard way again and see if I can improve on last week's time...
I ran out of week to do a 10k in week 3, but got 3 good strength sessions and 3 circuit training sessions done, plus my 5k and an interval running session. Had intended a couple of good hikes as we were away at the weekend, but only managed 5 miles in total! So, legs well rested today, and I smashed my PB for my hilly 10k this evening (I waited til it cooled down a bit as it was a scorcher earlier!), at 1hr 6m 7s, or 6m 37s per km. Very pleased!
I flunked this challenge completely.. too few runs... my infected Horsefly bite and now the latest shock of a stress fracture across under my 'misaligned' Patella!!!...( possibly old or new.. the MRI will tell) have put paid to all plans!
GPS can be a real pain - I have taken to leaving our flats by the back door, as I seem to be able to pick up GPS fairly reliably behind our block but not in front of it! It's probably more of a superstition by now
Hi, my comments seem to keep disappearing! If you can see this one, please can you tell me what your actual distances were each week? I'm getting different pace calculations to yours.
No more records for me. Been snowed under with work this week so I will have to live with 58:57 for now for the 10k :). Will try to break it again when things ease up a bit on the work front. Just happy to get out and run when I can these days
First thing this morning was the only opportunity I had to fit in a 10K run and I wasn't really prepared for it, but I was determined to fit one more in before the end of the challenge. First 5K were fine and all was good, I was running a bit slower than norm but a steady pace, and then it deteriorated from there. Ended up walking/jogging and my legs felt so heavy and had no power in them at all.
Still it's been a great challenge! I'm thrilled with what I achieved this month and I'm equally thrilled it's over! Fitting in a 10Km run each week has been hard and probably more than my body was ready to take on, but it's taught me so much about running and myself so thank you roseabi for organising it!
And it's very generous of you to include my result from last week in the challenge but you did very clearly state at the beginning that it had to be the same route!
I loved how much you enjoyed that run last week, so I wanted to include it
It's been great! And you have done an amazing job, it's hard work running fast in the summer! As I suggested to Macmac above, I think that the next speed challenge will be verrrrrry interesting in the cooler temperatures of October (unless we get a heatwave, ha).
Well, I had my eyes on the prize, knocked two seconds off my first mile, then it all fell apart! So, identical time to my week 2 run, 32m 03s for my hilly 5k. I'm off to Portugal tomorrow ... perhaps I'll find a flat wind-behind-me route and get that elusive 10mins per mile run done next week? Thank you so much to Roseabi in particular, and to everyone in the challenge, for all your encouragement! I look forward to some longer just-for-fun, less structured fartlek type runs for the next couple of weeks - if the heat allows!
1st day in portugal today ... got a PB for 5k despite being unable to find a flat route. It ended up being similar to home with a long steady run downhill followed by a long slog back up. 5k in 31m 10s - 10min 2s per mile - oh so close to my target 10m per mile! Not to be included in the chart as it isn't my original route but very happy with the result
It's been such a busy week that I haven't managed any running until now. I left the house at 11 pm, just as the street lights were coming on, but it was still quite light out. I managed to force myself up the initial hill a little faster than usual, but ended up having to wait a few seconds at a traffic light.
My result: 5 K at 30:57! My best 5 K time ever on that route.
Thanks! I have to admit I've been checking, just to cheer myself up. I seem to have pushed myself too hard yesterday, and my bad heel has flared up, so I'm hobbling around.
I sure have. I don't understand how a little speed could have got me in such a state. It's really painful. I iced my foot last night, and have done so again today. I'm off to the UK tomorrow, so I'd prefer to be able to walk through the airport!
Congrats on your PB!! I’m guessing you’ve already had lots of advice about your foot and tried all sorts of things but rolling my foot on a frozen bottle of water worked for me. And now when I get a niggle I use my deodorant bottle as a roller! The curve in it works perfectly!
Thanks! I've been using a frozen bottle of water for the past month, so I agree that it's a great thing to do. I hadn't heard the deodorant tip, though! Luckily I'm almost back to normal today.
I also want to add my thanks. I’ve really enjoyed the challenge, and have been telling everybody about it. I wanted have got up to such a pace without the challenge.
