Hey there people, get comfy, this is a long one......

What with all the shenanigans about the weather FB was ablaze with, will they, won’t they, cries of, cancel! You’re irresponsible! People will get injured! We were still a bit on tenterhooks until well into Saturday....the organisers stood firm....its on!

Still had snow covering the garden when we left Sunday morning, extra layers on ( to discard at the start) roads absolutely fine....park and ride into town, once on event village, it felt like a lot of people, far more than last year. (Over 7000 apparently) ...tried to find Curlygurly2 , failed! Tried to find AncientMum , failed! Couldn’t even find anyone from parkrun, just a sea of faces.....

Four waves this year, I was in the last, so we stood for what seemed like ages wistfully watching all the others go......one new thing, loos in pen areas, good call! (I didn’t use them myself, but a useful addition)

Then we were off, took near on 20 minutes to get all through the start, jettisoned additional layer and off we went, very little wind, cool, a bit damp almost perfect conditions. Because of all the warnings about the cold I also had gloves headband and neck buff on, gloves and headband came off before mile 3....hot!

Now, I’ve had some loo issues in training, ahem....waterworks...so, only had half a cup of tea, then decided, I wasn’t going to stress about it, and there were loos at every water station. I wasn’t planning to stop at the first water station, but thought I’d check in with the water board to see if a pit stop was needed....noticed a queue of at least 5 so, nope, not stopping here.....(we’d popped into the expo on Saturday and picked up pacing bands - paper wrist band with mile/KM timings for your target time - I’d gone for 2hrs 30, a bit ambitious, but hey...) so checked pacing band and no, keep going, I also still had the 2:30 pacer in my sights....

2nd water station was about 5 Miles, picked up some water.....looked over at the loos, again a queue of at least five people, I thought, nope! Quite comfortable, I am not queueing (looking at pacing band)....I did start to lose the pacers here, I was about a minute behind, but ok...

Then we were out through Grantchester and the country roads, music at the pubs, caught up with a parkrun friend, had a little chat, we went along together for a bit.....then turning back towards the city....3rd water station, again, checked with the water board, still ok.....still loo queues! Nope, I am NOT queueing....

Back towards the city centre, out to the ‘backs’ - where you can see the colleges etc., one if my favourite parts of the course, at about 10 Miles....a turn over Garrett Hostel bridge (AKA hostile bridge 😂🏃‍♀️) it’s a short steep up and down, and you have to try not to frown and grimace as there are photographers here.....channelling inner prancing pony.....see pic...

Just before the bridge there was a very angry shouty lady complaining to the marshals that she wanted to go in some direction and couldn’t as there are all these runners there! How dare they! She was very shouty......we just sniggered as we went by....

Then back through the central streets of the city and retracing the route back past water station 1, aka 4....picked up water here...and had a little break...I’d had little breaks at 6k, 12k and about 16-17k.....this was now the tough bit....the last 3k... a long road up to a roundabout, made it! Right turn towards and up Elizabeth way bridge, it’s not that much of a slope when you drive over it, but running it.....the last mile, it may as well be a mountain....but I kept going, I actually thought if I stopped now, I really wouldn’t start again, so slow and steady...rocking along, up and down two more turns to go.....

Round the first.....see finishers now walking along the paths with their medals....I feel really emotional, don’t know why, it always hits me at this point.....loads of encouragement.....just keep going, round the last corner.....and saw my daughter and her boyfriend..., me polite as ever.....says....’sorry, can’t stop, I’m on for beating last years time’.......ha ha ha😂 what am I like.... anyway, legs felt good, saw the finish gantry and went for it....over that line! See pic...🏃‍♀️

I swear they move that finish gantry further up the road when you’re not looking! 😂

Phew! Beat last years time by 5 minutes, 2hrs 35, that’ll do me. (and a garmin PB - I got a cup! Ok not a real one like aliboo70 ’s, but it’s on my garmin stats)

Best spied home made sign on route - ‘all this for a banana!’ Loads of high fives with the kids, brilliant marshals, great crowd support, great bands,.....loved it.....also taking part were, bananas in pyjamas, a minion, Spider-Man and a carrot.....

Now....what was it I was saying about not feeling the love and the training being so hard......🤔.........i’ll be back.......

💪🏃‍♀️🏅

Only dissapointment was my utter failure to catch up with ancientmum and curly...doh!🤦‍♀️

Happy days, happy running all

Mx

wow, what a read Madge! - Congratulations on such a great run! You must be really pleased to know you knocked off a full 5 min from your earlier time. Really well done! All that for a banana eh? :)

Thanks Decker.....yes, and they were quite right, said banana was in the goody bag, along with a men’s razor....one for everybody....just what I needed..🧔🏼.....got to keep the moustache and beard under control somehow.....😂

Hehe love your post, well done. Great time. We had loos next to our wave as well and quite big ques, the only thing that both me and mfamilias said was it made want to go more. It’s like you have to go before you leave the house, but a great idea. Glad it all went ahead and. Pb what is not to love. Hope your recovery goes well.

Absolutely awesome, and I love the report :) Great time, you clever thing. My favorite home-made sign was "Smile - remember, you paid to do this", at km 19.

Oh that’s a good one! I wouldn’t know whether to laugh or cry at that point.....😂....or maybe do both.....🤪

I laughed and told the woman holding it, "Touché".

Oh, the shouty lady bit made me smile. While I was running the Big Half, I saw someone who had actually pressed the button on the pedestrian crossing and waited for the green man, then stepped out and walked across the road through the runners :D

You definitely channeled your inner prancing pony ... you look great! And so happy! Well done! Great race, great time, great report 🎉💕🎉

I’m surprised the picture came out like that, i’m sure it didn’t feel like it at the time.....😬

The few races I've done so far, every pic has me grimacing or making some weird facial expression. In my defence, I was quite ignorant to the fact that the photographers were there so didn't even try to smile. I now know better. It'll be a huge Cheshire Cat grin next time 😁 (But then I'll have to be more aware of what's happening around me)

Well done Madge! Looking good there matey 😁👍🏅🏃‍♀️ I was running that with you 😁

Rest up now, good grub and plan your next one. Perhaps you already have 😁

They’ll probably be ok tomorrow. Try and keep moving about a bit. You’ll be hungry all week 😁. Make some healthy soup snd stews, chilli or curry and rice, as it’s easy to shovel down 😁😋

Yes! How cheeky! And to run in a club vest too! That was definitely me, my aching muscles can vouch for it! I’m glad they’ve upheld the rules, too right! And I paid more for my entry as unaffiliated....

I thought the time was a bit dodgy too for someone of an older age group against 20 year olds, when I first saw the results....🤔

Oh that is crazy! - he seemed to take it well in the video. I wonder how old his boss was? Probably raised some eyebrows

Madge50 profile image
Madge50Marathon in reply toDecker

The boss was 45-49 I think....which did make you wonder....I.e an ordinary Joe,(albeit a member of the same running club, I think) not a Mo Farah sort....🤔

mfamilias profile image
mfamiliasHalf Marathon in reply toMadge50

Realfoodieclub and I saw Mo's head bob past us (it was presumably attached to the rest of his body, or maybe a Ferrari) as he continued his race - we were still waiting to start, and he'd done 32 minutes and was already on the second half of his half marathon.. Sigh...

Madge50 profile image
Madge50Marathon in reply tomfamilias

Ha ha ha, that’s like us lot in the last wave, when we get to 3 Miles, the only shared part of the course, we get to ‘cheer’ the fast lot on their way back, having reached the 9-10 Mile point......😒....didn’t last too long thankfully 😂

How amazing just to be around the same space as Mo.....participating in the same race.......even if it did make you want to just cry and stare in awe at the same time....😳....at least you can say you raced against him......sort of......😂

Thanks Sandra, there was a little tot being held up by her mum, so sweet to tap her little pink woollen gloved hand, her smile and squeal of delight was a treasure, one i’ll remember.

Quite amazed at my face really 😂, but I missed them last year, it wasn’t pretty, so I knew they were there....subconscious effort!

Mx

Wow Madge what an achievement! Well done on your pb. That sounded like a fab run and I know the area too having lived nearby for 10 years. I can only hope my hm goes as well as yours did. Enjoy eating like a cavewomen, totally deserved.

Thanks rfd, it was good, especially after all the weather nonsense. You’ll be great, I know you will, have faith in that training, you’ll smash it!

Well done you! I was there too and although disappointed as had to run/walk from 7 miles for what reason I have no idea (makes it my worst effort yet as sailed up to 11k in training) it was an experience. You're right, I too had headband and gloves which were whipped off fairly smartly as even though we stood in the field beforehand wrapped in foil looking like a flock of turkeys, it was surprisingly warm. Great effort! :-) :-) :-)

Madge50 profile image
Madge50Marathon in reply towez70

Oh wez, what are we like, we must improve on getting together! Next time lovely, next time.... Don’t be disappointed, you did it, didn’t you? And don’t forget it’s a flippin’ long way! 😬

I joked with some of my family about getting the vest and shorts out...once the temp went above freezing..........I could have done with a vest on the way round.....definitely! And the rustling from the foil made me laugh, it was almost all you could hear, especially during the warm up!

By the way, are you doing Perkins this year? We’ve signed up for it....

Fantastic! Well done!! You did amazingly on Hostile Bridge, what a lovely photo! I really like the sound of this half marathon. I've not come across pacing bands before, interesting. Love seeing the signs that people bring :)

Madge50 profile image
Madge50Marathon in reply toroseabi

Thanks roseabi, one of my favourites last year was a pic of the abfab ladies running, with a caption that says ‘run darling! , there’s booze at the finish line!’ My kind of running, especially if it’s bolly! 😉

The pacing band was useful just gave me an idea of how I was doing, but I wasn’t pushing it, was just hoping I could keep ‘comfortable’ and not too far off the 2:30 target....

You did great! Really well done, and you look happy in those photos! I was right near the start, by the first set of traffic lights, I saw Rick go past, but no one else that I knew.

No t-shirt? What a load of tight wads! I rather liked the medal though....

That bridge is also known as something else locally - it's known as the orgasm bridge cos it's such a relief when you get over it....

Thank you!, i think I remember you telling me that before.......about that bridge......😂, I’d have preferred to have had the hat or a buff instead of the razor!

There is a lot of detail in the medal, maybe that’s why it’s smaller....can’t please everyone, eh!
