As I get older.....

With my memory problems only growing, I'm starting to feel more and more afraid that I might be susceptible to dementia. It's a frightening thought for me, to think one day I may not even remember my family any more. I'm especially concerned at how that might hurt my daughter.

I'm probably being irrational by worrying about this already as I'm only in my 50s, but I can't help myself. I hope I can find ways to cope.

In the meantime I'm spending time every day doing mind exercises. I enjoy crossword puzzles and sudoku.

Hi Ageingwithgrace. Please do try to not worry so much as you are still quite young! It sounds to me as if you are doing all the right things. I have also heard that nutritional supplements such as vitamin B and fish oils can help.

With regard to your daughter, sometimes peace of mind can be brought by putting arrangements in place now such as Lasting Powers of Attorney so that you can be reassured that IF you should experience memory problems in the future, there is someone there who knows all about you and can support you where help is needed. She will also not face the possible problems of trying to help you but finding barriers where legal authority is required.

I have also found a good website - fromyoutome.com which produces books that members of families can complete with lots of different information/answers to questions so that valuable memories are not lost. So many days whizz by quite quickly where we take each other for granted and I would have loved to know more about my Dad before he sadly passed away. They also make great presents when they are filled in.

Hope this helps....
