Injection Update

Hello everyone. My appointment yesterday, for injection, was the fastest ever. In and out in less than 30 minutes. Unfortunately, even though I had my favourite nurse, the after effects were the worst I have had for a very long time. Not only the eye that had the injection but the one that didn't was streaming. The injected eye was very sore as if I had a lump of gravel in my eye. I do suspect it was caused by iodine. A night's sleep has improved it but top and bottom lid sore. I will survive!!

The taxi driver was not quite the same as the community transport drivers who look after me very well if I'm on my own. When we started off, he was wearing rubber gloves, after a short time he decided to take them off - not an easy job at any time but especially difficult when driving and need at least one hand on the steering wheel! I wasn't in the hospital long enough for him to finish his lunch so he continued to eat and drink on our way home.

Anyway, I got home safely and here I am next day, feeling a little better now. Best wishes to all - wishing you good luck with your appointments.

You're the second one to post on here that the injection was not good. Sorry to hear that Bobbie. Mine is next Thursday, I want the injection but not looking forward to it now. Were you pleased with the cleanliness and distance procedure?

I wouldn't be great at seeing cleanliness! The pillows which are normally available, have now been removed. The assisting nurse stood well away and no hand holding. offered. I did wonder if they would be taking tempreturs but they were not. I also expected to be told to use the hand sanitiser, but I had to ask for it. There was no patient in the operating room when I arrived but one came in about 5 minutes before I was called and was seated a long way from me.

Good luck next week. I look forward to hearing how you get on. Now they have test kits, you might be lucky to have someone who has been tested!

Glad to hear injections going ahead. Sorry to hear of difficulties. Iodine seems to cause a lot of people trouble. My opthl. solved it by no pre-op. drop, and only using 1/2 strength iodine just before injection with thorough wash-out. They put a red "name bracelet" on me. Post- injection pain had been a big problem with me, the anaesthetic drops I was allowed to take home worked briefly, but the if I went on using them, THEY caused a sensitivity. SO no more anaesthetic drops to take home. But anyway the 1/2 strength iodine + good washout, and no drop in waiting room has solved the problem.

I have been having injections for nearly 3 years, but with spaces when my eye was stable,

Recently I had a loading of 2 Eylea injection. prescribed. I had the first about 6 weeks ago. Despite enquiring when/if the 2nd one is due I have as yet heard nothing. Routine enquiries ringing up drew a complete blank. I'd just like to know. PALS are looking into it for me.

I'd ask for 1/2 strength iodine, Bobbie, no re-op. drop in waiting room. (My cons. doesn't have any faith in the alternative to iodine). All the best, and very best wishes xx

Thanks fed13, that is interesting. It took me quite a while to realise it was iodine that was mostly responsible for the bad after effects. In fact, I think I first came across the into on this forum! I always remind the injector to go easy on the iodine . I have been fortunate in having the same nurse, more or less every time for about 2 years and never had a problem. I did think it was all done very quickly this time. I have never had an injection in the waiting room. What is that for?

The routine is normally, eye sight check, drops for dilation , OCT scan, see the doctor. Go to injection area or back home if not needed.

I was just thinking how fortunate we are having this forum. How else would we know what others experience. If you know the questions to ask, you might get answers at the clinic but I have never found them to be very forthcoming with info. xx

Hi bobbie915. So helpful to hear experiences. I have also had awful pain and discomfort after injections and drops prior to injections do not affect the pain of the injection. When I complained they increased the amount of aneAsthetic drops but ‘‘tis only made it worse. Have realised that having very dry eyes to start with, the pre op drops also dry up the eye, as does the iodine, this was a perfect storm for awful after effects. Last injection still painful but no after effects ....thank the lord. When I find out what was changed will post it. Hopefully this Thursday if appt not cancelled.
