Dear Suejoyce,

The function of the injections for wet AMD is to suppress the abnormal blood vessels, stabilise the eye, maintain vision and prevent further damage. Therefore, if the eye becomes stable for a period of time, due to the abnormal blood vessels being successfully suppressed, then there will be no function for the injections. However, it is possible that the wet AMD may become active again, in which case further injections would be needed.

I am copying the links to our booklets on Treatment and our Essential guide to wet AMD:

if you would like to discuss the injection process with someone who has been through the experience, we do have injection buddies. Please contact us if this is of interest.

The Macular Society helpline is open 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday on 0300 3030 111.

Alternately, you can contact us via:

Kind regards,

Isn't this jumping the gun a bit? Sue-Joyce has only said that she has an appointment at the hospital, she may not have been told what the treatment is yet.

Good luck with your hospital appointment next week. It's a scary time when you've just been diagnosed and don't know what to expect but the doctors/nurses at the hospital will be able to talk through everything with you There isn't currently any treatment for the dry AMD but they should be able to halt the progress of the wet AMD and improve things for you.

Ok thanks Suejoyce. I have wet AMD in both eyes, one for 5 and a half years and the other 4 and a half years. I think we are all so fortunate that there is a treatment they can give to stop the condition getting any worse and it's well worth all the trips to the hospital to keep things stable. Make sure you have a list of questions you want to ask when you go to the hospital next week as it's so easy to forget things when you're there. Let us know how you get on x
