Does anyone know if the hospital have a duty of care and have to inform patients they must tell the DVLA when they have ARMD in both eye?

Hello Hyacinth,

In our experience on the Helpline at the Macular Society, hospital consultant ophthalmologists and optometrists at opticians do not always advise people not to drive when they should not be driving. They certainly do not inform the DVLA. But if they tell you that you must not drive because of poor sight, then you must not. Don't assume that because you haven't been told to stop that you are safe and legal to do so.

If someone has a sight affecting condition in both of their eyes they are legally obliged to inform the DVLA.

Even if you have a sight affecting condition such as macular degeneration in both eyes, you may still be legally able to drive. It is all down to your visual acuity.

Please see our booklet on driving at the following link;
