Hi. I had glandular fever at age 15 with a recurrance a year later. Then spent years feeling unwell and having problems with my health. At the age of 30 suddenly began getting times ehen stiffness and constant pain made me cry. Was diagnosed with SLE at 31. Rheumy looked back over medical history and said that the glandular fever was probably the root cause of illnesses and auto immune issues. Hope this helps.

Yes, I had it twice as a child and my rheumy connects it to my SLE.

Yes. I had glandular fever at 21 and was diagnosed with Lupus at 47. Was told that there was possibly a link between the two.

Hi, yes I had it at age 14/15 missed a great deal of school. I then had Immune Thrombosytopienia which is low platelet count which they said had come from the Glandular fever. I had problem with one leg/side of lower body went sort of numb and I couldn't walk. That was I diagnosed at the time although I found out later they thought MS.

I got a really bad infection from my c-section which was not treated properly and my body shut down. They said that was what caused my Lupus to become active.

I had the same problem but far worse with my legs from waist down, no feeling or anything which they said was Pernious Anemia which is caused by lack of vitamin D (we get bit D from sun and due to lupus I stay out of sun so have to have injection of that and B12).

Anyway they have now said that the Glandular fever might have been the original catalyst that kick started the lupus from being dormant.

Me too, had glandular fever (clinical diagnosis as failed to show in tests) in 2006 - never fully recovered and health went downhill from there - constantly ill, weak, lethargic and and joint problems began in 2008 - diagnosed SLE in 2010.

Definite correlation/link between the two. Either glandular fever was a trigger to the underlying SLE or, glan fever didn't show on tests as it was SLE mimicking illness.

Either way the link is there.

Why do you ask? Did you have glandular fever?

Thanks for all your replies, I thought there may have been a link, as from having glandular fever I 've never been well since, my rheumatologist has never told me there's a link but I asked a student at work and she had lupus and glandular fever...its got a lot to answer to I had it at 14. :)

My crisis of health really came when I had glandular fever in my late 20's. Prior to this I had had German meascles and Chicken pox along with a bunch of other stuff.

But it was the Glandular fever which really took me down and from which I never really got back from.

Have discussed this in Facebook groups - many lupus patients have glandular fever in their medical history. Graham Hughes has included it in his 'alternative lupus criteria'. Although to put it in context, it's a pretty common illness anyway! xx

I suppose it is a common illness, just interesting, wonder how many people haven't had some kind of severe virus though

Hi Happyday, I had the Asian Flu, directly followed by Glandular fever, at 12 (missed school for 2 months) and have suffered various symptoms ever since - wasn't diagnosed until I was 50. My then consultant said I had had SLE since childhood. There was always something wrong with me, so yes, I believe there is a connection. As the glandular system runs everything in the body, I wouldn't be surprised if various auto-immune conditions originate from Glandular fever ..or similar. xxx :)

Yep, I'm another. Had Glandular Fever in my early 20s. On and off for years I have had severe unexplained fatigue. I wonder just how long I may have had some lupus traces before it was finally diagnosed.

I have Lupus SS Fibrimyalgia, had 3mini strokes. Was diagnosed when I was 34 after 6yrs of being ill. I am now 56. I have always felt nervous for 2out of 3 of my children. They always seem to get anything going and always seem tired. My son who is 35 has come down with Glandular Fever, he had an eye infection last week, and has got worse feeling like the worse flu possible. I had to take him to the doctors today he could barely walk and looks like he has gone 3 rounds with mike Tyson. The doctor didn't do a blood test just on symptoms, throat infection also. I wish he had done a blood test to make sure that is what it is. I know I have to be careful round him because it is infectious but I look after my granddaughter one day a week she is 15 mths. Just feel worried would anyone else be or am I imagining things. Thanks for any advise. X

Yes I was very sick with glandular fever, and now ive been diagnosed with mixed blah blah, they think it could of been a false negative caused by the autoimmune conditions.
