A few years ago my GP diagnosed me and treated me for gout, when my hand swelled up. It turned out to be a misdiagnosis. I never had gout. I had some sort of infection.

I hope they tested you for gout, because they didn't test me. It would have saved me from months of intense pain.

I've got a swollen toe and looking at the NHS site it looks like gout but not yet diagnosed. initially All my joints were this swollen but meds helped so I'm not sure. Take care

I had gout back in the summer, thought I had broken my toe, its BLOODY hurts !! I was told to drink more to flush the uric acid crystals out of my system. Although my whole foot wasn;t swollen, just the toe joint which went purple. I took brufen for the pain. I have mentioned it to the rhumie, who is going to keep any eye on it. I have stopped wearing high heels but this is mainly because my toe joints ache anyway ... hope it gets better xx

I have problems with one big toe. It becomes inflamed right at the end from time to time, goes crimson red and sometimes purple. I bought an aloe spray, recommended by a friend and it seemed to help. Its very painful when it flares up. A doctor at the hospital said it was a fungus but I'm not so sure, I didnt think so much pain came from that....hadnt seriously thought of gout, always believed that was an alcohol problem...

Trouble with gout is it can so easily be misdiagnosed. And people who do actually have gout can be diagnosed with something else. When my GP diagnosed me with gout, he gave me something called colchicine, which is pretty toxic. It was my rheumatologist who said," you don't have gout, you don't fit the profile and estrogen will protect you until your 65".
