Hydroxychloroquine is a safe and effective drug for many symptoms of lupus. However, a small number of people taking it develop eye damage (though the risk of this has been reduced since new guidelines were developed on doses and regularly having eye examinations to catch any issues early).

A research study is investigating if genetic testing could identify people at risk of developing this eye damage. If they are successful, they hope to develop screening which would inform those at risk to avoid the drug and use alternative treatments, preventing them from developing this damage.

You can find out more about the study, and how to sign up if you are interested, in our article here: lupusuk.org.uk/research-stu...

Take care,

Debbie
