is the link to the article you mention. I suppose it confirms that Covid trigger autoimmune disease - but they have autoantibodies for other disorders but haven't found a treatment yet ...

It’s an interesting read thanks for sharing. You must be celebrating this morning ⚽️

Hehe - it's all very restrained here - I heard the cheers at the penalites so went to sleep rather assuming Italy had won but hadn't watched the match. I'd rather watch paint dry. Shame about Berrettini though - can't stand Djokovic ...

I’m with you on the tennis, he’s so cute, I could adopt him 😆

We have a ginger up the road from us - rejoices in the name of Sinner! Age 19 I think - but SOOOOO much promise. But says he isn't going to the Olympics ...

hopefully they will try harder now so many people could be suffering from long covid. If they can find several vaccines for covid in such a short amount of time perhaps they can find something to help us. fingers crossed.

It is an insult though to all of us isn't it? It has been blatantly obvious that Long Covid is like ME/CFS in being an autoimmune disorder triggered by a virus. But they jumped about it when there were half a million people who'd been ill for a few months - and 4.5 million people who already had something equally awful for years have been hung out to dry both during and after lockdowns. Are we offered special clinics and rehab?????

Maybe we should start asking our consultants why they treat long covid better then they treat us or why do they listen to long covid sufferers and not us 🤔 x

first we would have to be able to speak to our consultants. not easy these days

It is - but a GP test for autoimmunity would spare us the 7 years to diagnosis 👍...Hope springs eternal, as you say! xxx

Mmmm - but it is unlikely to be a single test is it? I've forgotten all the immunology I knew ...

The photo in the article shows a neatly packaged lateral flow-type home test for antibodies....but I thought this pic would be more interesting.. 🙃

Depends on which autoantibodies they've found in Covid....maybe it's just ANA for GPs to cascade..... xxx

They did a simple blood test to rule out long covid with me a GP.

Yes - but they were looking for Covid, not a range of antibodies.

I know in pulmonology at least autoimmunity was high on the list of causes of post Covid syndrome. One of the frustrating things for pulmonologists, though, is that patients were clearly suffering but many were coming back with normal CTs and pulmonary function tests. I was actually my doctor’s only patient at that time to have evidence of inflammation and improve on steroids. She was happy to finally see improvement in someone.

It looks like in the lungs it may be easier to treat if it is post Covid inflammatory syndrome. I may be on a steroid inhaler the rest of my life, though.

It was doctors in Innsbruck who first saw the lung damage potential - a group of scuba divers in their 40s who hadn't been hospitalised had the sort of lung damage that was likely to mean life-long medication and medical monitoring. But it was never made much of in the UK - so young people still were thinking they wouldn't be very ill.

People still don’t get it that the mortality rate is only one measure of the danger of this virus.

ICU doctors saw the vascular nature of it early on, too, and knew the potential to damage many bodily systems. They were right. ENTs noticed some patients have trouble breathing because of damage to vocal cords. I was checked for that and was okay. Like autoimmune disease, it goes anywhere ..

It will be interesting to see the figures after Sunday. And how long it takes for the next nasty mutation as a result ...

International collaboration in R&D hopefully means better vaccines snd cures for the world

I think that we already know that one of the triggers for an AI disease can be a virus. That said, not meaning to be pessimistic, but I don't see that Covid research will necessarily go toward AI disease at this time. I have had long Covid since November and none of my doctors have any real answers except for over the counter meds to help symptoms. The gastro symptoms and PVC arrythmia along with no stamina and increased fatigue are the worst. Lack of taste is annoying. I still think when I first start to eat something it will taste like real food. My brain at first makes me think that. I eat by texture now. Like AI issues, Covid 19 is different in everyone which complicates everything. Maybe if you are a famous person, you will get more help. Otherwise, oh well. Sorry for being a downer, but that has been my experience. That said, it could be worse and I realize that, just not expecting some magical answers where Covid 19 is involved at this time.

Healing hugs.

And here’s the intro:

“…Scientists have raised hopes of a blood test for long Covid after discovering distinctive patterns of rogue antibodies in patients whose symptoms persisted for months.

Researchers at Imperial College London identified so-called “autoantibodies” in long Covid patients that were absent in people who recovered quickly from the virus, or who had not tested positive for the disease.

Unlike normal antibodies which help fight off infections, autoantibodies attack healthy tissues by mistake, causing ongoing damage and illness through the equivalent of biological friendly fire.

With the further easing of coronavirus restrictions in England on 19 July, some scientists believe the UK should be braced for hundreds of thousands of cases of long Covid, a condition where patients experience symptoms such as chronic fatigue, breathlessness, muscle pain and headaches…”

etc etc…
