Who says you need more than double the recommended daily dose of magnesium? Like many other things, too much of a good thing can be dangerous. Magnesium can be one as it affects your heart and muscles.

Above 350mg/day you would be likely to have diarrhoea which could be severe. But you need to speak to a doctor about whether you need such a high dose and if so it should be overseen by a healthcare professional.

Hi there PMRpro, thank you so much for your reply and the info you passed on. I have read a bit more now.I was advised to take it by my gastric surgeon (I had a sleeve gastrectomy 6 years ago) also my gp and my pharmacist know about his suggestion and have said there are no counter indications in taking it. Who else could or should I ask? I worry about taking anything, if I'm honest, as I take a cocktail of 28 prescribed drugs each day.

If your doctors are advising it that is OK - as long as it is under medical direction. I assume that maybe you don't absorb well?

As for which - it depends why you need it. Magnesium is magnesium, it doesn't really make a lot of difference which version you take if all you want is that but the various salts (citrate, oxide and so on) it is combined as may possibly be better for one thing or another. These are good articles from a reliable site:

Hi Mandie. Most take magnesium in the form of magnesium oxide. Typical dose is 500 mg. I don’t think I’d take more than that because it can cause some serious GI cramping and diarrhea. I’d try 500 mg daily first. To start with 1000 mg might be a little much IMO esp if you’ve had bypass surgery. Magnesium citrate/Malate is typically liquid and used as a laxative. Do not use this as a supplement.

If you have problems with taking MgOxide at 1000 mg, you should ask your physicians to prescribe something called SloMag which is magnesium chloride mixed with calcium. It doesn’t get all absorbed at once and has less GI side effects. I see you can buy it over the counter now but it’s much pricier than MgOxide so I’d ask for prescription.

Hope this helps answer your question. Have a wonderful day! ❤️xx
