Changing meds epic fail..

Hi All. I usually try and post positive messages but am having a rough run. I have SLE and hypothyroidism and hypertension. I have been having a flare since March. I take prednisolone, hydroxychloroquine, and up until recently methotrexate for SLE. The inflammation was still out of control. The rheumatologist changed me from methotrexate to azathioprine. For a month, things were OK, but now I have had a liver enzyme spike that is so high they have stopped the azathioprine. They plan to try them again soon. Anyone else out there had this happen?

Morning i haven't got much to say except nice to meet someone who also has SLE and hypothyroidism, I have found the thyroid not being treated properly (who knows what my t4 does) sets off the lupus, this has been going on a long while and think my adrenals gave up trying to support my busy lifestyle. Have just started to look at my diet and hoping if i follow the paleo diet i might remove some of the inflammation and toxins myself, have an endo appointment next month and will be asking a lot more questions since reading stop thyroid madness, how can they keep prescribing drugs for symptoms and not treating the cause, mostly nutritional as far as i can tell. will try to get NDT prescribed if they know what it is and get off these hideous drugs they're happy to dish out. most days i feel like a out of control zombie and i also worry what my liver is doing (very important bit of kit), enough is enough time to look a bit deeper.

Good luck x

I had the same problem with azathioprine. It is a known potential side effect, which is why they do monthly bloods to check liver enzymes. I was switched to mycofenolate mofetil which is less likely to cause liver problems, and it has worked very well for me. Don't lose hope - it took 4 years to find the right meds and dosege for me.

All this medication makes us ill !!! And doesn’t get to the root of our problems. In fact it’s just dealing with the symptoms !!!! Please try auto immune diet it really helps xxxx
