Remission?

Can anyone clarify for me when someone would be diagnosed as being in remission? How is remission classified?

Thanks

Hi Godfrey,

remission isn't a word that is really used these days by medical professionals (i was one of them). 'Stable' is the word most used or NED (mainly in USA) meaning ' no evidence of disease'.

What is deemed as 'curable' cancers are usually followed up 3-5 years following surgery to make sure that there is no spread, after that period 'cured' can be used. Cancer that is deemed none 'curable' can be treatable and that is where the word remission would have been used if treatment is working but these days if treatment is working you are more likely to be told your disease is stable.

Hope that helps

Many thanks Lyn. I was curious after watching Tricia Penrose and her Mum on Daybreak yesterday and the word remission was used.
