Hello Palooka

Sorry to hear you have a nodule on your lung. You will naturally be anxious about this, but these nodules are fairly common and are not necessarily cancerous, they can be caused by many things for example infection or scarring. Often, a biopsy is taken to aid diagnosis of the nodule. This can be done as a needle biopsy with ultrasound guide to locate exact position or by bronchoscopy.

Our information leaflet on lung cancer diagnosis has a section relevant for investigations on Page 16.

Hello Palooka,

I had two needle biopsies taken in 2020. The first one did not get enough tissue to be certain of a diagnosis. Neither biopsy was dramatic. Very little discomfort. I've had mammograms far worse!😉 Wishing you a good outcome.

Hi Palooka.

I had a biopsy taken during a bronchoscopy - camera into the lung. I was sedated, and apparently I wasn't very happy during the procedure, but I remember nothing about it ! I coughed some small amounts of blood afterwards. Let me know if I can answer any other queries. All the best.

Myself and my lung team decided to go with a PET scan instead of a biopsy which shows if there is any activity within the nodule, On mine there was so went ahead with lobectomy, and the results of the tests on the nodule after surgery showed a neuroendocrine tumour so the PET scan was right. I was happy with my decision not to have the biopsy done beforehand

hello Palooka. Yes I had a lung biopsy in March and was naturally very anxious. It’s the unknown I guess, but the anxiety was totally unwarranted. I had local anaesthetic and the whole process was over within, I would say 20 minutes and I can honestly say I would prefer to have another one than have a filling at the dentist. Good luck, but it’s not as bad as you’re anticipating, I’m sure. X
