Tagrisso and hair thinning

Hi, I have stage 4 cancer diagnosed in May 2021, I have been taking Tagrisso since July 2021 and apart from a really bad skin reaction in the first weeks have tolerated it really well, just a few minor side effects . In the past 5 weeks though I have noticed my hair is really thinning and fragile, I am really worried and uneasy that I am going to lose my hair. My consultant says I shouldn’t but can’t give guarantees, has anyone any advice or experience of hair thinning? Any advice would be appreciated.

Hello Goldmoon,

On targeted therapies such as Tagrisso, some people do experience hair thinning and slow growth of the hair, also dryness and itchy scalp.

It is best to discuss this with your CNS who will be able to recommend treatment.

General advice is to use gentle hair products such as baby shampoos, avoiding anything with harsh chemicals, such as colouring or perms.

Use a soft bristle brush and comb or brush gently.

Avoid high heat, such as hairdryers, tongs or straighteners.

Pat dry your hair after washing.

Protect your scalp from sunlight.

The scalp can feel feeling dry, flaky or itchy, your CNS may be able to prescribe or recommend something that will help.

If there is anything else that you would like to discuss you can contact us on our free phone nurse led helpline number on 0800 358 7200 Monday to Thursday 0900-1700 and Friday 0900-1600, alternatively you can email us at lungcancerhelp@roycastle.org

All the very best

It may be nothing to do with your drugs. I am on ant-emetics and pain relief, but I am 'moulting heavily'. Finding stray hairs among my possessions has become my new hobby.

It's amazing what is on offer now though. You can buy real hair fringes and a turban style headcover. If I lose a lot of hair, that will be my choice for headwear.

Not what you're looking for?
