Holidays for Brain Cancer sufferers.

I have brain cancer, came from the lung.

Can only move around very slow with walking fram, also using a NHS bed that could cause a problem, have a bit of a problem sliding into it.

My mind is still very active & think a break would help wife & I.

Still got hospital dates to consider but where can we go & how arrange?

Any ideas?

Oh gosh sorry to hear that. If you want to go away it might be tricky to get insurance, I can’t so I just make sure I have enough money in my savings to get a flight back super quick if abroad. If not abroad you should be ok and we are so lucky to have so many places near to us at most times so depending on insurance that might be a good option also and import that you get to have some chilled time! What I'm looking for are companies that run holidays like this, any offers?

Hi Beatless

It sounds like a break away would be great for you both. It depends if you want to go within the UK or are considering abroad, there are many factors to consider, as Cockailschemocancer mentioned insurance may be one of them.

If you are thinking of within the UK it may be best to look at places that are wheelchair friendly, lift access if you are in a hotel, or if self catering there are many places that cater for your mobility needs, and getting in and out of bed etc)

This link is to our travel booklet: roycastle.org/app/uploads/2...

This link is for those with cancer who need assistance and aids within the accommodation:

disabledholidays.com/about/...

You may wish to look at somewhere that makes moving around as easy as possible for you both. If you do not have a wheelchair, one can be hired through the British Red Cross: redcross.org.uk/get-help/hi...

There are many wheelchair assisted taxis within the UK and rental vehicles: alliedmobility.com/

Cancer Research UK also have some travel tips: cancerresearchuk.org/about-...

If you have not applied for our patient grant, of up to £150, you can apply for this to put towards your holiday, this link will take you directly to the form: roycastle.org/patient-grant...

Some people try a short trip away first to see how they manage and then book a longer trip the next time.

If you are still struggling to get in and out of the bed, do speak to your GP about a reassessment of your needs at home, you can often have a hand frame that one end is tucked under your mattress and the other end you can use to get yourself in and out of bed.

If there is anything else you would like to discuss, you can email ask the nurse at lungcancerhelp@roycastle.org or call our free phone nurse led helpline number on 0800 358 7200 Monday to Thursday 0900-1700 and Friday 0900-1600

Hope you both manage to get away and be good to yourselves.

Kind regards
